- 9 июл. 2025 г.Chinese engineers have developed an advanced protective material for hypersonic missiles that can withstand a record-high temperature of 3,600 °C. Hypersonic craft face enormous thermal loads, but most metal alloys begin to fail at around 1,000 °C. The carbide-based ceramic created by Chinese scientists endures up to 3,600 °C in an oxidizing atmosphere—far beyond the heat levels encountered in today’s hypersonic flight. Potential uses include aerospace hardware, weapon systems, and even semiconductor lithography, where the material could shield components from plasma radiation. Our team is the first in the world to break this long-standing barrier through high-entropy, multi-component design. — Chu Yanhui, professor at the South China University of Technology. The new carbide ceramic—made from elements such as hafnium, tantalum, zirconium, and tungsten—shows a much lower oxidation rate at 3,600 °C under laser irradiation than any previously recorded material. Leading space powers are racing to enhance hypersonic aircraft and weapons. The technology could let a missile or glider reach any point on Earth in under an hour; Chinese researchers even claim they have devised a weapon able to strike anywhere on the planet in just 30 minutes. Why it works? The material owes its performance to a unique oxide-layer structure: a tungsten-based framework is filled with oxides of the other elements. These oxides shield the tungsten from further oxidation and form a barrier that blocks oxygen from penetrating deeper. Faster testing The team sped up development with a laser test platform. Traditional evaluations rely on wind-tunnel runs, but laser heating lets researchers observe samples as they rise to roughly 3,800 °C. Applications According to the developers, the ceramic “can be used directly as an external protective layer for space vehicles or in power systems exposed to extreme heat.” It can serve as a stand-alone composite or as a coating. Thermal tolerance limits the performance of any high-speed vehicle.
