Who is behind it? In a recent spy case at the Old Bailey, individuals linked to the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) were found guilty. The case exposed how these Hong Kong officials operated in Britain — accessing Home Office-linked data to track activists’ addresses, following them to events, attempting break-ins, infiltrating communities, and gathering intelligence. HKETOs were given privileges because Hong Kong was supposed to remain free under the Sino-British Joint Declaration. That deal has been broken. Hong Kong’s autonomy is gone. Journalists are jailed. Dissent is criminalised. So why are we still granting them special status on British soil? Strongly Condemn the Labour Government’s approval of the Chinese “Mega Embassy” Plan HongKongers in Leeds strongly condemns the Labour Party government for pushing ahead with the Chinese “Mega embassy” despite overwhelming opposition from local residents, Hongkongers in the UK, other communities persecuted by the Chinese Communist regime, and human-rights advocates. The proposal faced objections from the local council and the police, and Hongkongers took to the streets on nine separate occasions. Public opposition was clear, broad-based, and resolute. Yet the Labour government has chosen to press on regardless. This decision is not only a trampling of democratic process; it is a wholesale betrayal of communities persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party, showing utter disregard for the safety and dignity of the British public. This so-called Chinese “Mega embassy” has never been an ordinary diplomatic facility. It symbolises significant political risk, raises serious national-security concerns, and poses a tangible threat to dissident communities. It is deeply troubling that the UK government appears willing to abase itself before Beijing, merely to present a “political gift” ahead of a future prime ministerial visit to China. We must reiterate the many dangers inherent in approving this project: 1️⃣ The Chinese government has been repeatedly exposed for engaging in transnational repression overseas, including surveillance, harassment, and intimidation of dissidents. Approving a large-scale, opaque embassy complex will not only heighten fear among UK residents but also pose a direct risk to domestic security. 2️⃣ The proposed site is located close to critical communications and data infrastructure, including data-cable facilities. This raises grave concerns about intelligence gathering and communications security. When dealing with a hostile regime, the risk of data leakage is incalculable. 3️⃣ As increasing numbers of CCP personnel are granted diplomatic immunity, their activities will become effectively beyond meaningful oversight, leaving the UK dangerously exposed. The irony is stark. While the Labour government claims to uphold human rights and the rule of law, it chooses to place its trust in a regime that has blatantly torn up its international commitments and dismantled freedom and the rule of law in Hong Kong. For Hongkongers, this so-called “trust” is chilling. We must again stress that the Chinese “Mega embassy” does not only affect the daily safety of Hongkongers, Tibetans, Uyghurs, and Chinese dissidents in the UK. It directly implicates diplomatic risk and the UK’s own national security. Today’s decision makes clear that, where “diplomatic interests” are concerned, the safety and voices of citizens are deemed expendable. We will not be silenced by this decision. Protest will not stop. Scrutiny will not stop. Accountability will not stop. History has shown that silence only enables repression. Speaking out is the only way to protect ourselves and defend our dignity. Local residents will shortly challenge this decision through judicial review. ✨✨Beacon of Freedom 自由之光 ✨✨ 釋放黎智英 全球游擊投影行動 - 英國列斯| Free Jimmy Lai Guerrilla Projection Global Action Leeds (UK) 列斯手足連線響應「釋放黎智英 全球游擊投影行動」，喺星期日（1月11日）列斯市中心Leeds Art Gallery 外進行快閃投影行動，以聲援黎智英及一眾喺香港受政治打壓嘅手足，並呼籲市民關注香港日趨崩壞嘅政治實況及倫敦中國超級大使館嘅審批。 黎智英案剛剛喺尋日（1月12日）開始求情階段。黎智英並無喺堂上發表求情。喺中共破壞咗嘅香港法治制度下，明顯政權想以黎智英案殺一儆百，洋洋數百頁嘅判詞生安白造，只係想重判黎智英去作寒蟬效應。黎智英面對如此壓力仍能堅持，希望香港人或者所有支持民主自由嘅同路人都繼續支持佢撐落去！希望正義及早到來，還所有自由民主鬥士一個公道！ HongKongers in Leeds took part in the “Free Jimmy Lai – Global Guerrilla Projection Global Action”, carrying out a flash projection outside Leeds Art Gallery in the city centre on Sunday (11 January). The action was held to show solidarity with Jimmy Lai and all Hongkongers facing political persecution in Hong Kong, and to urge the public to pay attention to the rapidly deteriorating political situation there, as well as the proposed Chinese “super-embassy” in London. The Jimmy Lai case started its mitigation stage yesterday (12 January). Jimmy Lai did not make any personal plea in court. Under the destroyed juridical system by the Chinese Communist Party, it is clear that the authorities intend to use his case as a warning to others. The hundreds of pages of judgment are little more than a contrived justification for imposing a heavy sentence, designed to create a chilling effect. Despite facing immense pressure, Jimmy Lai has remained steadfast. We hope that Hongkongers, and all those who stand for democracy and freedom, will continue to support him and stand firm.
