FDA initially refused to consider the mRNA flu shot because Moderna did not use a true placebo - they compared mRNA to a traditional flu shot. In the study, 2% of participants who received the mRNA vs. 2.8% who received the traditional flu shot developed the flu. Side effects were significantly greater in the mRNA group.
