Bilal told us that an hour after our last visit, someone from the authorities came to him and said that if he signed an agreement, he would be allowed to leave! But since that day, which was two and a half weeks ago, nothing has happened. He asked us if we had received any information or heard anything, which we unfortunately had to deny! He also asked us several times how we were and if everything was alright! Sacrificing the Soul of Islamic Activism: The Silence on Bilal Abdul Kareem by Counter Source The passivity surrounding Bilal stands in painful contrast to how the same activist networks respond to other high-profile cases, with a clear parallel seen in the recent mobilisation for the British journalist and commentator Sami Hamdi. When Hamdi was detained by immigration authorities at San Francisco airport on October 26, 2025, the response from the Muslim community was immediate and overwhelming. Activists launched an instant onslaught of media interviews, public petitions, and highly coordinated advocacy campaigns that quickly reached the highest levels of political power in the United Kingdom, culminating in Early Day Motion 2168, which was tabled in Parliament just three days later on October 29, 2025. The empirical data of this disparity is impossible to ignore when comparing the public digital footprint and media coverage over a three-month window following each arrest. Between the three-month period of October 26 and January 26, a search for “Sami Hamdi detained” yielded 271 distinct results, while a search for “Bilal Kareem detained” during his respective three-month window of December 22 to March 22 yielded just 5 results. This staggering discrepancy forces us to ask why such highly selective mobilisation exists within our advocacy spaces and why our community chooses to pick and choose its battles so selectively. Is this disparity driven simply by the size of a public platform, or is it because Bilal’s captivity does not fit the convenient, neat political narratives that certain groups wish to maintain? Furthermore, we must confront the uncomfortable possibility of an undercurrent of racial bias shaping whose struggles get prioritised and whose get overlooked. Staying silent in the face of ongoing oppression is an implicit acceptance of that oppression, and this prolonged indifference leaves a stain on the moral credibility of organisations and people that claim to stand for Justice.
