School of Physics: HEPCo Weekly Seminar Series Title of talk Shining the Neutrino Flashlight into the Darkest Places تاباندن پرتو نوترینو به تاریکترین (ناشناخته ترین) مکانها Date and time Tuesday, June 3rd, 2025 (13 Khordad), 2:00 pm (Tehran zone) Link https://www.skyroom.online/ch/schoolofphysics/highenergyseminar Abstract The most phenomenologically important properties of neutrinos are the facts that they don't interact with regular matter very much and that they change which charged lepton they like to interact with during propagation. The presence of matter does modify the propagation of neutrinos, somewhat, and I use this fact along with known oscillation parameters to probe environments that cannot be otherwise directly probed. In particular, I will show how low energy atmospheric neutrinos provide information about the Earth's core and that this can be determined by DUNE. I will also use current data from solar neutrino experiments, constrained by reactor neutrino data, to determine the density in the core of the Sun via neutrinos for the first time, as well as future sensitivities.

Our group's research focuses on the following topics: 1. Multi-wavelength, multi-scale studies to understand BH accretion, jet formation mechanism and feedback to the galaxy. 2. IMBH/candidates and BHXB accretion-jet activities. 3. Dual/triple-AGN/SMBH identifications and cosmological implications. 4. BH gravity testing. 5. AGN feedback in the view of HI. 6. Slow and Fast Transients with QTT and VLBI follow-up (SLOFT-QTT), mainly focusing on TDE, BHXB, FRB, GRB... We also develop and run SKA simulations in advance of real data. It begins with an overview of the historical development of artificial intelligence and foundational concepts in deep learning, followed by practical implementations of deep neural networks (DNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in high-energy physics analyses, including supersymmetry searches and jet substructure studies. The presentation then introduces quantum machine learning (QML), covering models such as quantum support vector machines (QSVMs) and variational quantum classifiers (VQCs), along with their advantages and challenges in Higgs boson identification. Finally, the use of generative AI is presented as a solution for data generation in both Standard Model and beyond Standard Model scenarios, enabling the production of synthetic datasets significantly faster than traditional Monte Carlo simulations involving MadGraph, Pythia, and Geant4. This has raised the excitement that the first release of the DESI results generated in both cosmology and high-energy physics communities, and if taken at face value, it is the first time that the standard ΛCDM model of cosmology has faced a serious observational challenge. In this talk, I will first provide an overview of dynamical dark energy and why we may need it, and will then delve into the DESI findings, explaining what we have learned about the nature of dark energy and what we have not. We consider the implications of this scenario for the QCD axion. We find that in the scenario in which the axion is localized on the standard model brane (which we argue is natural), a combination of theoretical (being bounded by the 5D Planck mass) and observational constraints forces it to have decay constant in a narrow range f~10^9 −10^10 GeV. 🇪🇪 Walls and Voids in the Spatial Galaxy Distribution: Morphology, Hierarchical Topology and Statistical Characterization of the Cosmic Web 🇪🇪 Job Description We are advertising a 4 year PhD position within the context of the Horizon-Widera EXCOSM project on Galaxies and the Cosmic Web. The position is shared between the University of Groningen, at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute (the Netherlands), University of Lorraine (France) and the University of Tartu, at Tartu Observatory (Estonia). During the PhD period the first 1+1 years will be spent at the University of Lorraine and at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, the last 2 years at Tartu Observatory. We are looking for a highly motivated individual interested in studying the cosmic web environment. The project focuses on the detection and characterization of the walls and voids in the spatial galaxy distribution of the cosmic web, combining mathematical concepts from stochastic geometry and persistent (algebraic) topology. The PhD project will be supervised by Prof. Elmo Tempel (Tartu Observatory), Prof. Rien van de Weygaert (Kapteyn Astronomical Institute) and Prof. Radu Stoica (University of Lorraine). Venue: Online Link https://www.skyroom.online/ch/schoolofphysics/colloquium Abstract The purpose of this survey is to take a snapshot of the attitudes of physicists working on some of the most pressing questions in modern physics, which may be useful to sociologists and historians of science. For this study, a total of 85 completed surveys were returned out of 151 registered participants of the ``Black holes Inside and out'' conference, held in Copenhagen in 2024. The survey asked questions about some of the most contentious issues in fundamental physics, including the nature of black holes and dark energy. A number of surprising results were found. For example, some of the leading frameworks, such as the cosmological constant, cosmic inflation, or string theory - while most popular - gain less than the majority of votes from the participants. The only statement that gains majority approval (by 68% of participants) was that the Big Bang meant “the universe evolved from a hot dense state”, not “an absolute beginning time”. These results provide reasons for caution in describing ideas as consensus in the scientific community when a more nuanced view may be justified. چکیده: هدف این نظرسنجی، ارائهٔ تصویری از نگرشهای فیزیکدانانی است که بر روی برخی از مهمترین پرسشهای فیزیک مدرن کار میکنند، که میتواند برای جامعهشناسان و تاریخنگاران علم مفید باشد. در این مطالعه، از میان ۱۵۱ شرکتکنندهٔ ثبتنامشده در کنفرانس «سیاهچالهها از درون و بیرون» که در سال ۲۰۲۴ در کپنهاگ برگزار شد، مجموعاً ۸۵ پرسشنامه تکمیلشده دریافت شد. این نظرسنجی به موضوعاتی از جمله ماهیت سیاهچالهها و انرژی تاریک پرداخت. نتایج شگفتانگیزی به دست آمد؛ برای مثال، برخی از چارچوبهای پیشرو مانند ثابت کیهانی، تورم کیهانی، یا نظریه ریسمان—با وجود محبوبیت—کمتر از نیمی از آراء شرکتکنندگان را به خود اختصاص دادند. تنها گزارهای که اکثریت (۶۸٪ از شرکتکنندگان) با آن موافقت کردند، این بود که مهبانگ به معنای «تکامل جهان از یک حالت داغ و چگال» است، نه «آغازی مطلق برای زمان». این نتایج نشان میدهد که در توصیف ایدهها به عنوان اجماع در جامعهٔ علمی، باید با احتیاط برخورد کرد و دیدگاههای دقیقتری را مد نظر قرار داد.
