Waiting for the Healing Beloved, Have you ever had to keep up a decades-long prayer vigil on behalf of someone who is precious to you? Those moments of exhaustion mixed with sobs of frustration... the fervent, effectual prayers of a righteous (wo)man avail much. I've been waiting for word on the condition of someone who crashed again... physically, mentally, emotionally. In prayer—read desperate emotional dialogue—I laid out my case before my King Jesus. I recounted the years, the catastrophic events, the long-term emotional bondage, the besetting sins and failures that keep leading to this devastation. I put it all on the table. Again. I poured out my frustration that it seemed we never gained any traction. It felt like one step forward and three steps back. Where are the lasting gains? Knowing that Jesus sees the end from the beginning, and that He alone truly sees the heart, I also knew I couldn't see what He sees. I cannot know the quiet work taking place deep within a person's soul, mind, and emotions. Realizing that...that is the moment my prayer broke down. No elegant words came. In fact, I realized I no longer knew exactly how to pray. I became quiet, deflated, waiting, with only one refrain left: "Abba... please help ______." The final step in that sequence, for me, was to surrender. Just as Jesus prayed, "Not my will, but Yours be done, O Lord." This time, however, something changed. Instead of ending my prayer with anxiety, I found myself saying, "Thank You." And every time my mind tried to replay the sequence of events and imagine every possible outcome, I refused to walk back down that familiar alley. Instead, I answered my fears with the same prayer: "Not my will, but Yours, O Lord. ______ is in Your hands, and You are completely trustworthy. Thank You." I don't know what tomorrow will bring. I still don't know how this story ends. But tonight, instead of rehearsing my fears, I choose to rehearse God's faithfulness. Not my will, but Yours, O Lord. ______ is in Your hands. You're completely trustworthy. Thank You. Let's pray. Abba, You know the burdens we carry for those we love. You see every tear, every sleepless night, every prayer whispered through disappointment and hope. Teach us to trust You when we can't see what You're doing. When we're tempted to carry what belongs in Your hands, remind us that You're both willing and able to bear it. Help us surrender our need to control the outcome and replace our striving with quiet confidence in Your goodness. Not our will, but Yours be done. John 19:11 Nothing that is not God's will can come into the life of one who trusts and obeys God. This fact is enough to make our life one of ceaseless thanksgiving and joy. For "God's will is the one hopeful, glad, and glorious thing in the world"; and it is working in the omnipotence for us all the time, with nothing to prevent it if we are surrendered and believing. One who was passing through deep waters of affliction wrote to a friend: "Is it not a glorious thing to know that, no difference how unjust a thing may be, or how absolutely it may seem to be from Satan, by the time it reaches us it is God's will for us, and will work for good to us? For all things work together for good to us who love God. And even of the betrayal, Christ said, "The cup which my Father gave me, shall I not drink it?" We live charmed lives if we are living in the center of God's will. All the attacks that Satan, through others' sin, can hurl against us are not only powerless to harm us, but are turned into blessings on the way. --H. W. S.
