    #Note The Orange Pig's administration cancelled an offshore wind farm project in the USA, and as a result a German Company called RWE had a major financial loss and had to lay off 73 engineers in their US office suddenly, among which were multiple Geotechnical Engineers. The RWE filed a court case and sued the American government and the American government has to pay $1.2bn to RWE.   • #Conference Energy Geotechnics 2027 | Plans are Taking Shape... Planning is well underway for the British Geotechnical Association’s fifth biennial Energy Geotechnics Conference, taking place at the University of Leeds on 14–16 September 2027. The conference programme is currently being developed, bringing together experts from industry, academia and the client community to explore the increasingly important role of geotechnical engineering in delivering the UK’s future energy infrastructure. Topics will span the energy sector, including offshore and onshore wind, geothermal energy, hydrogen, nuclear, grid infrastructure, energy storage and emerging technologies, supported by technical papers, an exhibition and plenty of opportunities to network and share knowledge. 🤝 We’re also looking for sponsors!     #Phd #position Mechanical Behaviour of Fissured High-Plasticity Stiff Clays. Aarhus University (DK) Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD position at Aarhus University, Denmark, on the mechanical behaviour of fissured high-plasticity stiff clays. The project aims to improve our understanding of how fissures, anisotropy and soil structure govern stiffness, strength and progressive failure in natural clays. The research combines advanced laboratory testing with constitutive modelling to establish a micro-to-macro understanding of soil behaviour and develop physics-based constitutive models for improved prediction of landslides and climate-induced ground movements. We welcome applicants with a strong background in geotechnical engineering, advanced soil mechanics and geomaterial testing. Application deadline: 20 August 2026.     Advanced #course on Modeling of Localized Inelastic Deformation (LID 2026), Prague, 10-16 September This traditional course taught by Milan Jirasek is now offered in a new format, namely in two parts that can be attended independently. The first part (Sep 10-12) provides an overview of modeling approaches used in the mechanics of inelastic materials and structures, in particular in plasticity and damage mechanics, with brief comments on fracture mechanics. The second part (Sep 14-16) focuses on the objective description of highly localized deformation modes such as cracks or shear bands, using regularized models (e.g., nonlocal, gradient-enriched, phase-field, micromorphic). The course is intended for graduate students at the doctoral level, but it can be equally useful to motivated master students, post-doctoral researchers, or senior researchers who are not specialists in this field.     #PhD #position at University of Kassel The Department of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Kassel offers a PhD position. The aim of the project is to expand an existing comprehensive database on the load-bearing behaviour of piled rafts to develop approximate approaches for estimating average settlement, the piled raft coefficient, and position-dependent pile spring stiffnesses, which can be used in the preliminary design. The database contains results of extensive 3D Finite Element Analysis and field measurements on real foundations. Methods of machine learning will be used to develop these approximate approaches.
