  • 8 авг.🇵🇰🇹🇷🇸🇦 It’s Signed: The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement Update to my January piece: what I flagged as a possible Muslim collective security bloc is no longer a “what if.” On Friday, August 7th, Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia signed the pact at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca, following the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence. PM Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Jeddah a day earlier with COAS Asim Munir and performed Umrah in Mecca on Friday morning before the leaders sat down to sign. 🔹 What’s actually in it The joint statement doesn’t leave much room for interpretation. Any armed attack on one of the three is treated as an attack on all. That’s a real commitment, not a diplomatic pleasantry. 🔹 The public framing Erdoğan called it a pact built on collective deterrence and said Ankara stays committed to resolving regional disputes through dialogue. Saudi Arabia’s deputy minister for public diplomacy went further, saying the agreement isn’t about building a military axis or a sectarian bloc, and isn’t tied to an arms race. Read that however you like, but that’s the official line all three governments are sticking to. 🔹 So does this pull anyone into Yemen right now? This is the question everyone’s actually asking given North Yemen’s escalating strikes on the Saudi-backed south over the last 24 hours. My read: no, not automatically. Mutual defence pacts don’t retroactively absorb conflicts that were already running before the ink dried. A new signatory has to formally step into an existing conflict, it’s not inherited the moment you sign. Saudi Arabia has shown restraint in Yemen for a while now, holding the line without relaunching a full aerial campaign, and that same posture looks like it’s shaping how this pact gets used in practice. 🔹 Why the incentives line up strangely well Here’s the part I think gets missed. Saudi Arabia and Türkiye want peace because it protects what they’re actively building, economic diversification, defence industry growth, Saudi’s slow pivot away from total dependence on the West. Iran wants peace too, but for the opposite reason. Tehran isn’t building, it’s waiting. It’s betting that US dominance in the region and the dollar-centred order both lose enough ground over time that Iran can outlast the pressure without ever having to fold. Different sides of the table, same short-term preference. Worth sitting with. 🔹 Bottom line The pact is real and the language is stronger than most expected. But right now this reads as deterrence through existence rather than an appetite for immediate action. Yemen is the first real test of where that line actually sits, and we’ll know more soon. @ThePulsePoint1,39%
