29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. -Matthew 24:29-31 Our Savior here hearkens back to Isaiah's oracle on judgment. From Isaiah 13:10, "the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light." Isaiah does the same thing Jesus is doing here as well. As he pronounces God's imminent Judgment on Babylon, he also brings in language that speaks of *ultimate* judgment. The near event of Babylon's fall is compared to the far event of the last day. So it is with the destruction of Jerusalem; the near event completed in 70 AD is a prefigurement of the far event of Christ's return in glory. We know this to be the case for a very simple reason, namely that of fulfillment. As Jesus says in the beginning of the chapter, the Temple was destroyed and the jews were scattered. Yet the elect were not gathered from the four winds. St. John stated here on earth along with all other living Christians well past 70 A.D. The fulfillment of the prophecy concerning Jerusalem is a *sign* that the latter prophecy shall come true. This is encouragement for us today. It has been nearly two thousand years since the Cross. How do we know that Jesus will return as He said He would? Because He gave us the other prophecies as a sign, a measure of evidence that we can trust His Word on the matter. When we hear that final trumpet's blast and the celestial bodies go dark, then we will see the latter signs fulfilled in their entirety and go on into eternal blessedness.

  • SUNDAY RESOURCES NOW UP! For this week's homily, let's look at Cain and Abel from a different angle. Why Cain killed his brother is actually pretty easy to figure out. • 23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. -Matthew 24:23-28 Here Jesus tells us that the surest sign of a false christ is found in their mundane presentation. Oh a man might seem to do miracles. Oh he might seem wise beyond measure. But if someone claiming to be Christ does not first arrive in such a way as to have immediate impact across the entire world, then that is assuredly a false christ. When Jesus returns for Judgment, the entirety of humanity will be put on notice and taken straight to the Great White Throne. The dead will rise out of their graves, urns, and the ocean floor. Reality will appear to bend and shift to being something we cannot fully comprehend. Simply put, it will be the most dramatic supernatural event in history, second only to the creation of the universe itself. If someone claims to be the Messiah or know where He is on earth, but does not arrive in this fashion first, then you know he or she is a liar and must be disregarded. Do not be fooled by any cult leader, whether they talk with smooth words or powerful preaching. They may sound oh so logical and reasonable, but their arguments are aimed only at pulling you away from the true Jesus. It could be some whackjob claiming to be a reincarnation of Jesus, or someone who has tapped in to "Christ consciousness." But those are false christs: others are false prophets pointing to false christs, even ones that they made up in their heads. See, it could also be someone who screams "Christ is King!" while being completely unable to articulate the true Gospel; *his* jesus exists solely for his political wish fulfillment, not for salvation. When a mormon speaks of the burning in one's bosom at reading about his fake jesus, or when a muslim argues that Christ was just some wise prophet, or when an academic claims that Jesus's body was eaten by wild dogs, all of these are false, made up messiahs that do nothing for anyone. But the *real* Jesus, who died on a Cross for your sins and rose again for your justification, shall come back in complete glory. There will be no mistaking the event, nor will there be any arguments. And when He arrives, we will see our greatest hopes fulfilled.

  • Dear Catholics: You know, 500 years ago Luther named your church Babylon and spoke of the papacy as the office of antichrist. Since then, the Catholic Church has insisted that this is not the case. Would you please stop doing things like hire unbelieving jews to head up your BIBLE STUDIES departments? Would you PLEASE stop proving us right for once? Sincerely, VLP staff

  • 15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. -Matthew 24:15-22 The abomination of desolation hearkens back to Daniel's prophecy of an antichrist figure who defiles the Temple and stops the sacrifices (Daniel 12:11). This prophecy was first fulfilled when Antiochus Epiphanes banned jewish sacrifices, slaughtered pigs for zeus on the Temple altar, and went so far as to ban circumcision as well. Christ tells the Apostles here that the same thing will happen. Indeed it did. The Romans arrived, destroyed the Temple, and brought their pagan standards into the holy place with no regard for the God who once dwelt there. Some historians have tried to identify the abomination as a jewish man, namely john of Giscala; during the siege of Jerusalem he and his men performed grave atrocities in the Temple grounds, which he used as a fortress. The problem though is that john was a *jew,* while Daniel's prophecy speaks of a Gentile abomination. This is much more broadly applicable to what the Romans did. Regardless of how Christ's prophecy was immediately fulfilled, the application remains the same: when they go after believers, run. Jesus does not want Christians to seek tribulation in some pseudo-pious virtue signaling moment. He never told believers to embrace persecution or martyrdom, but instead to flee. Just as this was the proper response during the jewish war, it stayed being the best course of action for the persecutions that occurred afterwards. We never should have permitted a cult of martyrs. The martyrs who bore witness of the faith even to the point of being beheaded are celebrated as heroes, and rightly so. But it is those Christians who fled and went underground who spread the faith. They made more Christians, the martyrs did not. The Gospel is preached by people with breath in their lungs, who endure the short days of persecution to proclaim the Word during long periods of calm. As Jesus instructs, let us not chase execution, but instead stay faithful to Him while preserving life.
