Ladies and gentlemen, I wonder if you've ever noticed the only surviving statue of Queen Elizabeth I carved during her lifetime when passing St. Dunstan-in-the-West church on Fleet Street in London. Sculpted around 1586, it is also widely considered the oldest outdoor public statue in London. The stone figure originally stood above Ludgate, one of the historic fortified gates into the City of London. When Ludgate was pulled down in 1760 to clear road congestion, the statue was, fortunately, preserved and eventually moved. For nearly 80 years, it was hidden away in the basement of a nearby pub before being rediscovered and placed at St Dunstan-in-the-West. Unfortunately, I couldn't find (at first glance) the name of the pub she was kept in, so if anyone comes across it, I'd certainly like to know. There she is, as strong and proud as ever she was. The next time you're there, have a good long gander and get a picture. 🤝
