🌍 Why does my proxy show DNS in South Africa?! We're covering one of the most common questions we've received this week. Watch the attached video for a full explanation, or read the short version below. You buy a 🇺🇸 US proxy, open Whoer, see a US IP — but the DNS field shows 🇿🇦 South Africa and a scary "Disguise: 63%". It looks like the proxy is leaking. Here's what's actually happening: 1️⃣ Look at the DNS address itself. If it's something like 172.253.x.x, that's a Google IP range. The proxy server is resolving domains through Google DNS (8.8.8.8). Google has servers all over the world, so your request may be handled by the nearest data center — often in South Africa, Singapore, or elsewhere. 2️⃣ That's not your DNS. Your home ISP isn't involved at all, which means there's no DNS leak. The website sees a DNS request coming from Google's infrastructure, not from your local network. 3️⃣ Does it matter? For almost nobody. Social media platforms, marketplaces, dating apps, and most websites don't compare your DNS location with your IP location. A few streaming services might, but for 95% of use cases it's just a number on a checker. 4️⃣ What about "Disguise: 63%" on Whoer? That's mostly marketing. The service is designed to make the result look alarming so it can promote its VPN. Real anti-fraud systems evaluate many other signals.
