🎯 A C2 Conditional You Probably Don't Use Enough English has a formal conditional construction with should: Should + subject + base verb, ... For example: Should you win, we would celebrate. Should you fail to do so, we would have no choice but to take further action. Should we win the prize, we would like to build a new school. The same structure can appear without inversion: If you should win, we would celebrate. 🧠 What does it mean? This construction refers to a possible future situation, but presents it as more remote, tentative, or unlikely. In terms of meaning, the English Grammar Profile considers this use more closely associated with the second conditional. Compare: If you won, we would celebrate. Should you win, we would celebrate. Both present the situation as relatively remote/hypothetical, although should specifically retains the idea that the event is a possible future occurrence. ✨ Why use it? The inverted form Should + subject + verb is especially common in formal English, particularly in professional, official, and written contexts. For example: Should you require any further information, please contact us. Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. You don't need to use fancy words to meet the criteria of using less common or uncommon lexical items in IELTS writing. For example, the word healty can be less common: HEALTHY 1️⃣ in good physical or mental condition; not ill She eats well and stays healthy. CEFR Level: A1 2️⃣ good for your health Walking is a healthy habit. CEFR Level: A2 3️⃣ showing good physical, mental, or emotional development Children need a healthy environment to grow up in. CEFR Level: B2 4️⃣ likely to develop or succeed in a positive way The company has a healthy cash flow. Low unemployment and steady growth are indicators of a healthy economy. SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD #review The subjunctive mood is a verb form in English that is used to express desires, suggestions, doubts, or hypothetical situations. By using the subjunctive mood, the speaker can convey a sense of uncertainty or possibility, and express ideas that are not necessarily rooted in fact. Subjunctive Mood: Backshift When using the subjunctive mood, verbs often change form. This process is commonly referred to as 'backshift'. Here are the changes: 1️⃣ Am/Is/Are → Be You are confident. → I suggest that you be confident. 2️⃣ has → have She has an English degree. → I suggest she have an English degree.  3️⃣ was → were I was happy. → I wish I were happy.  4️⃣ verbs in the 3rd person singular → the '-s' is omitted He exercises every day. → I suggest he exercise every day. ⚠️ In informal English, 'that' is commonly omitted from sentences with subjunctive mood: It's important that they be prepared. → It's important they be prepared.
