"The document that starts the whole catastrophe is a merchant’s delivery order. A fragment of burned parchment found in the town of Provins, listing thirty-six sous for wagons of hay, six new lengths of cloth with seal for rue des Blancs-Manteaux, and six bunches of six Crusaders’ roses at twenty deniers each for six locations in the town on the feast of Saint John, including three bunches for the whores’ street because the prostitutes wanted little hats of roses for the feast day too. That is the entire secret. A retired colonel misreads it as a Templar plan for world domination, three editors at a Milan publishing house take his misreading and build a coherent seven-century conspiracy on top of it, and the readers who receive that conspiracy believe it so completely that they hang one of the editors from the wire of Foucault’s pendulum in a Paris museum on the night of Saint John’s Eve. This is the mechanism Foucault’s Pendulum (1988) puts under a microscope. The mechanism is not that credulous people invent patterns where none exist. The mechanism is that fabricated grand conspiracies serve as cover for the ordinary coordination of power. Invent a seven-century Templar-Rosicrucian-Merovingian synthesis and hand it to the credulous, and three things follow. You satisfy the appetite for hidden meaning, which lets people stop looking at what is actually in front of them. You produce the crank profile the establishment needs to discredit anyone asking real questions. You build a decoy elaborate enough that the actual mechanisms of power operate unremarked while everyone chases the map." https://open.substack.com/pub/unbekoming/p/foucaults-pendulum-1988?r=lp6h7

What’s past is prologue: lessons for the modern university system. The monasteries had lost control of the cultural narrative. The symbols, stories, rituals, relics, and pilgrimages that had once legitimized their authority no longer persuaded as much of the public. Once their moral and symbolic capital had been exhausted, their economic and political capital proved remarkably easy to confiscate. aetherczar.substack.com/p/ii-1727-monasticism-dissolution-and

This paper shows that hydrogen’s radiative frequency and bandwidth scale with orbital radius like an electrically small antenna. The quantum observables point to underlying "hidden" physical variables: stored energy, radiated power, and orbital geometry. TIL that Egyptian cotton exports surged from $7M to $77M between 1861–1865, giving Britain and France an alternative to Confederate cotton, undermining the South's "King Cotton" strategy and helping strangling the Southern war economy until its surrender. https://ift.tt/jNiFqZe

🇲🇦🇪🇸/🇮🇱 A Moroccan conquest of Ceuta would mean that for the first time in centuries, the Strait of Gibraltar would not be fully controlled by European powers. It will instead be controlled by an Israeli proxy Arab regime. @SimurghRes

TIL that the Norfolk Broads a vast network of 41 lakes and canals in England are not natural. They are actually flooded, medieval industrial sites created because 12th-century monasteries hand-dug millions of tons of peat out of the ground to use as firewood. https://ift.tt/xNcpVIh

"As noted above, WaPo “confirms” the US lost 45 Reapers, equivalent to 25% of the entire drone fleet. Some have added that the Houthis had already taken out an additional 10% or so, which would likely edge it closer toward 35% total lost in the past year or two. "Interestingly, WaPo reports not all were shot down but many apparently fell victim to Iran’s—perhaps Russian-sourced—EW" https://simplicius76.substack.com/p/irans-strategy-vindicated-as-uss?r=lp6h7

Another outstanding keynote lined up for the Heaviside Symposium. In this talk, we focus on two more of Heaviside’s seminal discoveries in physics, Cherenkov radiation and gravitational waves. Both of these are now recognised by specialists as important discoveries, but neither are widely celebrated in the broader scientific community. https://aetherczar.substack.com/p/peter-davidson-to-keynote-the-heaviside?r=lp6h7

Onions bring different flavors, textures, and colors to every dish. Yellow onions are bold and perfect for soups, curries, stews, and gravies. Red onions add crispness to salads, burgers, tacos, and pickles. White onions offer a sharp, clean bite for salsa, guacamole, and stir-fries, while sweet onions are mild, juicy, and ideal for onion rings, raw slices, light roasting, and everyday cooking.
