In terms of the number of doctors, Sweden started with 3.6 doctors per 1,000 people in 1980, before falling to 3.0 in 1990 and then rising to 3.8 in 2000. France, by contrast, experienced a continuous decline, whose figure declined from 2.4 to 1.3 in the final year. Austria had by far the lowest figures, although its ratio increased steadily from 0.8 in 1980 to 0.9 in 1990 and 1.0 in 2000. The number of hospital beds followed a different pattern. Austria saw the most substantial increase, with its figure rising from 1.4 beds per 1,000 people in 1980 to 3.1 in 1990 and 3.7 in 2000. France also recorded a marked rise, increasing from just 0.2 to 0.8 and then 1.6. Sweden had considerably more beds than the other two countries throughout, which remained unchanged at 6.4 between 1980 and 1990 before climbing slightly to 6.9 in 2000. Regarding average hospital stays, all three countries experienced an overall decline: Austria fell sharply from 18 to 6 days before recovering slightly to 8, France decreased steadily from 9 to 5 days, while Sweden dropped from 23 to 18 days and then rose to 21. The maps illustrate the changes made to a small island following its development into a tourist resort. Overall, the island underwent a dramatic transformation from an undeveloped natural area into a fully equipped holiday destination. The most notable changes were the construction of accommodation and tourist facilities, together with the introduction of a network of footpaths, a vehicle track and a pier. It is also worth noting that the original beach was also converted into a designated swimming beach. Before the development, the island was a completely undeveloped area of land. A small beach was located on the western side, while the remaining area consisted mainly of open sandy ground with several bunch of palm trees scattered across it. The island was entirely surrounded by sea. After the development, the island became a fully equipped tourist resort. The beach was developed into a designated swimming beach while accommodation units were distributed across the island. A reception building occupied the centre, with a restaurant immediately to its north. Several footpaths connected the main facilities and accommodation areas, while a vehicle track lied from the reception to a pier on the southeastern coast.
