Many Australian engineers were set off on their career paths with an Ezy-Bilt set. Ezy-Bilts were made in Melbourne. They competed with Meccano from Britain and Märklin from Germany. The American Erector sets did not make it to Australian shops.

The pedal radio combined with the aircraft to make the Royal Flying Doctor Service possible. Founded in 1928 by the Presbyterians' Rev John Flynn of their Australian Inland Mission, the service first used Morse code. The pedal apparatus was invented by Alfred Traegar in Adelaide. Voice was added in the late 1930s. Their first doctor was Alan Vickers from Queanbeyan. By 1956 the Service covered much of the interior. The pedal radios also facilitated the School of the Air for children in the outback.
“Roy Slaven” (John Doyle) and “H G Nelson” (Greig Pickhaver) have been on radio, television and online since 1986. Their show was an acquired taste, but Australians whose teenage years were the years “Roy and HG” were also maturing their act have the comedy duo in their hearts. The pair built on Australian sports banter - which has lost its richness, subtleties and bonding power as the internet, WfH and the gig economy left less time and space for its organic development. Roy and HG are still on the air. The following YouTube link is to an example of their broadcasts, many of which have been lost as they were live radio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTzOMRWyqjA

Percy Wells Cerutty (10 January 1895 – 14 August 1975) was an Australian athletics coach in the 1950s and 1960s. He pioneered a system of "Stotan" training (Stoic + Spartan), embracing a holistic regime of natural diet, hard training in natural surroundings, mental stimulation and psychological fortitude. His approach resonated with Australian teenagers and inspired thousands in their athletics and their lives. In the first image above Australian 1500m world champion Herb Elliott leads Cerutty (in his 60s) up the iconic sandhills at Portsea, Victoria.
