This is how I manage my finances: I follow the 50:30:20 rule. Step 1: 3 bank accounts step 2 : Divide my income into a 50:30:20 ratio. But it's not that easy. Let me explain in detail. When I started working 2 years ago, I started with a 30k per month income. Then as per the 50:30:20 rule. 50% - needs - 15K 30% - wants - 9k 20% - Invest - 6k I kept my lifestyle as per my earnings, not the other way around. All my daily needs - rent, food, and commute, will be done in 50%, i.e., 15000. I kept 30k as my base and then after every increase in my income, it will again be proportionally divided but it will be opposite. Simply put, Let's say my income increases from 30k to 60k. Now i have an extra 30k from my base. I will again divide this 30k in a 50:30:20 ratio. but roles will be reversed. 50% - Invest - 15000 30% - wants - 9000 20% - needs - 6000 Any income, be it from freelance, consultation, or salary increase, will be divided in such a manner. Whatever my income increase will be, my lifestyle will only be uplifted by 20% of it. Now let's dissect if I'm earning 1 lakh rupees. Here's the complete breakdown. 30k base: 50:30:20 = Needs: Wants: Invest = 15k: 9k: 6k. remaining 70k: 50:30:20: invest : wants : needs = 35k : 21k : 14k So the final amount for me every month will be: Needs: 15k + 14k = 29k Wants: 9k + 21k = 30k invest: 6k + 35k = 41k Needs: will be my monthly expenses: rent, food, gym, commute, outside eating, etc., etc...Basically consumption. Wants: Something for my soul: gifts for parents, clothes, trips, shoes, or anything else. Invest:- stocks, MFs, gold, any course or coaching program, something that can help me grow my income. How do you manage your income? I would love to know more about it.
