A late night task 2 essay: Nowadays, many people use the Internet to get medical advice instead of going to see a doctor. Why is this? Do you think it is a positive or negative development? Widespread availability of information online has caused many people to rely on the internet as a source of information instead of seeking professional advice. Medicine is an example of a field where this has become the norm. While there are several reasons why this is happening, I think it is a change for the worse. The reason why people prefer to turn to the internet for medical information rather than visiting the doctor can be attributed to two clear reasons. For one, it is generally cheaper and time-saving to rely on medical information available online. With people becoming busier than ever and the price of medical services rising considerably lately, visiting a doctor could be more inconvenient. This is because not everyone might be able to fit a doctor’s visit into their busy schedules or afford the associated costs. So, clearly, many find getting medical information online as a more attractive option. Another argument is related to the credibility of this information. The majority of major medical organizations, including but not limited to WHO or FDA, run their official websites where they provide reliable information regarding health. This makes it easy for the public to keep up to date with latest news and advice in medicine. However, I believe that this shift in people’s behaviour is negative. Firstly because however busy everyone is, a person’s health is more important than anything else and one should not risk his or her health by solely relying on any information they find on the internet. Sometimes, a medical condition that seems minor at first may actually be a sign of something serious, and in cases such as these, trusting online information and not getting your condition diagnosed by a professional could lead to serious consequences. Moreover, despite the credibility of some of the medical information found online, seeking further medical assistance from an expert can provide a better understanding of how to apply this advice effectively. In conclusion, many people prefer online medical advice to consulting a doctor as this is more cost-effective and saves time. Nevertheless, help provided by professional medical personnel is still essential in many ways and therefore I personally deem this change in public behaviour toward seeking medical help as inappropriate. 360+words @erkinielts
