In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world. Do you think this is a positive or negative development? Improvements in global trade have led to an increase in consumer choices, allowing everyone to have access to food made globally. While some see this as a negative development, I personally think that it is a change for the better. There are certain drawbacks associated with international food being sold in all supermarkets across the globe. One obvious is its environmental impact. Such food often travels long distances, during which significant amount of co2 is emitted, before it reaches supermarket shelves. This process of transportation aggravates(=exacerbate) already existing environmental issues ranging from climate change to air pollution. Another important point to consider is that local producers often suffer as they often lack the resources to compete with products made by multinational brands. Consequently, they might end up losing business to these international companies and going bankrupt. However, the benefits of being able to buy food produced in foreign countries outweigh the drawbacks. Although the point about local businesses being challenged in competition against internationally made products is valid, I think they should focus on improving the quality of their products to be able to withstand competition instead of worrying about it. This way of thinking pushes them to innovate and stay in business. Moreover, wide availability of international food in supermarkets affords everyone wider choice and the opportunity to try food made in other countries without having to travel there. This not only makes customers happy and satisfied but also brings equality in terms of choices for everyone.
