Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the government would soon constitute a high-level panel on 'Banking for Viksit Bharat'. In this year's Budget, the Finance Minister had proposed a high-level committee on 'Banking for Viksit Bharat', to comprehensively review the sector and align it with India's next phase of growth. Addressing the two-day PSB Confluence here, Sitharaman said, "We expect the announcement of the high-powered committee to look into the banking sector... soon the committee will be announced." At least seven people were killed, and 14 more were injured on Monday morning after a stampede-like incident happened at the Ashokdham Temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district. The incident occurred at 6.30 am amid a heavy rush of devotees at the temple to offer water to Lord Shiva during the month of Shravan. The government will open a one-time window starting August 16, 2026, for small taxpayers to disclose certain undisclosed foreign assets and foreign income, a scheme announced in the Union Budget 2026-27. The CBDT has operationalised the Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers–Disclosure Scheme, 2026, notified under Chapter IV of the Finance Act, 2026.
