Like pearls a century ago, diamonds are losing elite status. Lab-grown diamonds will be widely available with minimal markups as production costs fall. A diamond bracelet that cost $1 million two decades ago now sells for the price of a used Rolex. Natural and lab-grown diamonds are nearly identical. Attempts to differentiate them with expensive equipment won’t change their everyday similarity. Buyers still pay a premium for natural diamonds, but prices have dropped by 50% in real terms over four years.
