  • 9 июл.this is more of a general reflection on the whole situation abstracted from the chatcontrol situation but like: the problem here at the core is that to pass this gestapo-ass law they transparently went completely anti-democratic (forcing the vote several times after a rejection and then waiting until people were on vacation to then have first a vote for creating an absolute majority requirement and then using that narrow restriction to finally pass it back in) this is, objectively, democratic backsliding, and i am not going to pretend people will be on the streets revolting, that is not how stuff works what will happen though is that reflexively when people start completely losing any faith in the rule of law they will act that way: there is now an understandable and transparent incentive to ignore the rule of law because the social contract has been broken in such a way it is impossible to hide it the result is, simply put, that people will actively, by default, put more effort into hiding what they are doing, whether they are criminals or not, and will consider the law as not reflective of their own interests at all, creating a layer of distrust that in the long run will actually make it harder to catch actual criminals and i am not even considering the implications this will have in people considering the EU a legitimate entity: this single decision + the tariffs one single handedly made and will make thousands of euroskeptics and it will be hard to change their mind considering how democracy is being treated like a doormat rn3,12%
