Most of us know the virtues and blessings associated with gatherings of dhikr (remembrance) and knowledge: Allah’s forgiveness and protection, tranquility and mercy descending, the angels surrounding them, and Allah mentioning these people in a greater gathering. But how many of us truly act upon this and rush to gatherings of knowledge and remembrance when the opportunity presents itself? Or are we from those who look for any excuse not to go? “It’s too far.” “I don’t even understand what the Shaykh is saying.” “The class is too early.” “It’s too long.” I remember years ago, there was a Shaykh who was traveling from another state to teach a book in a two-day dawrah (intensive course). It was about five hours each day after Fajr. Now, the class was advertised to be in English and some Arabic, so many brothers who only spoke English attended, looking forward to benefiting. To their surprise and disappointment, they found that the entire class was in Arabic. So they were just sitting there, not understanding anything. Like most of us probably would, they eventually left because they felt they could use their time better elsewhere. Except for one brother. He stayed for the entire class, and even came back the next day, knowing that he was not going to understand anything. After the class finished, we asked the brother why he stayed and even came back when he did not understand anything. He told us that he wanted the virtue and blessings of the gatherings of dhikr and knowledge. Think about that. He did not understand the lesson. He did not understand the Shaykh’s words. He could not benefit from the book in the way the other students could. But he understood something that many of us forget. He understood that simply being present among the people of knowledge and remembrance is itself a blessing. He understood the words of the Prophet ﷺ: هم القوم لا يشقى بهم جليسهم “They are a people in whose company no one will be miserable.” Sometimes we become so concerned with how much we will learn that we forget the blessing of simply showing up. You may leave with less knowledge than you hoped for—but you may leave with something far greater: Allah’s forgiveness, His mercy, His tranquility, and the company of the angels. So when Allah opens a door for you to attend a gathering of knowledge or dhikr, do not look for an excuse to not attend, rather rush to these gatherings for they are Jannah on earth!

  • A statement attributed to Ibn Al-Qayyim رحمه الله: ‘If your heart is thirsty, then do not quench it except with the Quran, and if your heart feels empty then do not fill it up except with the remembrance off Allah.’ Allah عز وجل describes the Quran to be a cure, a healing for the hearts from all diseases and illnesses. {يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ} Whenever you feel a tightness in your chest or heaviness within your heart, do not hesitate and flee to the remembrance of Allah ﷻ. Do not turn towards meaningless distractions, temporary pleasures, nor remain dwelling in your thoughts. Shaytaan pushes you towards that which only increases you in sorrow and that which further hardens the heart. The scholars mention that disregarding the Quran, or making it secondary to other than it, as a means of healing is a form of abandoning it. Let the first thing you turn to be the Quran.

  • ‘A heart does not stay empty. If it is not occupied with the words of Allah, it will be occupied by distractions, desires, worries and everything that pulls it away from Him.’

لا نجاة للمرء من هلكة الظلمات إلا بنور القرآن وضيائه. There is no salvation for a person from the ruin of darkness except through the light of the Quran and its illumination. If you find yourself constantly turning to the Book of Allah عز وجل seeking guidance and relief from your worries and sorrows, contemplating its meanings and acting upon its guidance then praise Allah and thank Him for this immense blessing. By Allah, there is no remedy more beneficial for the heart, no remembrance greater, no admonition more impactful than the Kalaam of Allah سبحانه. Hold firmly to the life of your heart, the light of your chest, and the purification of your soul. Safeguard your relationship with the Quran and ask Allah to increase you in your love for it and attachment with it. اللهم اجعلنا من أهل القرآن

Thus it has been made pleasing to the disbelievers that which they were doing.} Al-An’am: 122 {…وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُۥ نُورًۭا يَمْشِى بِهِۦ فِى ٱلنَّاسِ…} {…And made for him light by which to walk among the people…} It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas رضي الله عنهما said regarding the meaning of light in this ayah: 'القرآن، من صدّق به وعمل به' ‘The Quran, whoever believes in it and acts according to it’ [تفسير الطبري]

  • Listening to the Quran feels as though life is being breathed into your soul.

  • {ذلك يوم الخلود} الله أكبر

  • Another trick of Shaytaan we should be wary of is when you find yourself able to do extra on top of your normal routine. He will come to you the next day saying that the extra you did the previous day will suffice for today. Similarly, on a day you find yourself…

  • When you take on more than you can manage Shaytaan sees this as the perfect opportunity. You will eventually find yourself unable to uphold the amount you started with. Something you started sincerely to please Allah starts feeling like a burden. You therefore…

  • She also mentioned a beautiful benefit regarding the Sahabah رضوان الله عليهم. There were those from among them who completed the Quran every 3 days, those who completed it every 7, those who completed it every 10, those who completed it every 15 etc. The Sahabah had customised portions of the Quran that suited their personal circumstances and abilities.

  • Hold firmly and cling on to your daily portion of Quran. Being in a constant state of making up missed portions should not be your norm. Take that which you can manage and consistently ask Allah to grant you tawfeeq.

  • She spoke about this as it relates to the Quran, and the same applies to any act of worship. This is a silent fitnah that does not occur overnight. A person who would once sacrifice their sleep to ensure their daily portion of Quran was recited delays it to the next day. The ‘next day’ turns into two and and then three. At first, they manage to catch up, but this is where Shaytaan comes in. The next time they feel lazy he reminds them of that time they were able to catch up. Only this time they delay it for an entire week. Gradually, the sense of urgency they had to make up for their missed portion fades. They become accustomed to days and weeks passing by without engaging with the Quran. A silent fitnah.

  • A silent fitnah. An Ustadha حفظها الله mentioned a beautiful reminder that struck me: When you treasure and hold something close to your heart, prioritise it, protect it, and cling tightly on to it from fear of its departure, this is a manifestation of your love and dedication towards this thing. The departure of said thing no longer bothering you, or bothering you less, is a fitnah.

Salaam wa alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh bro. Wallahi, I hate having to ask like this, and Allah is my witness. The last few weeks have been really difficult for me. I have not worked for the past 3 months properly becaue of issues at work. Whatever money I had has gone on bills and helping back home. My mum urgently needs an operation because she has a boil at the back of her throat that needs treatment as soon as possible. I wanted to ask if you could speak to the brothers and see if anyone might be able to help me raise around £2k while I sort this work situation out. I’ve been trying my best to manage by doing delivery jobs and I just started a laundry delivery job yesterday, but they only pay weekly and it’s not enough right now. Even if you dont have it if you can share amongst your brothers to try and help raise that will be really helpful In sha Allah I’ll keep working and trying my best. May Allah reward you for even reading this bro. This I has been verified by me so if you wish to help a brother in hardship here’s his bank details below: Sortcode : 110486 Acc number: 13952268 Name: Alhaji Mansaray
