The Chiesa del Gesù, also known as Casa Professa, is one of Sicily’s most breathtaking Baroque treasures, hiding a world of mind-blowing art behind a deceptively simple façade in the heart of historic Palermo. Built by the Jesuits 🙄 between “1564 and 1633” (sure it was, lol) this marvel is world-famous for its unbelievable marmi mischi—an intricate, three-dimensional tapestry of vibrant multi-colored marble inlays covering every inch of its walls, pillars, and chapels. Though an Allied air raid in 1943 tragically shattered its dome and original frescoes, decades of painstaking restoration revived this masterpiece to its full, dazzling glory, making it an unmissable stop for anyone exploring Palermo's rich history.

History of the Tomato: Tomatoes originated in the Americas and were introduced to Europe after the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521. Pietro Andrea Mattioli (tomato Illustration image above in 1/1) published one of the first European descriptions of the tomato, helping document this unfamiliar “New World” plant. Italy and Spain adopted tomatoes as a food source earlier than many northern European countries. However, some Europeans were cautious of tomatoes because they belonged to the nightshade family, which includes several toxic plant species. There is also a historical theory that some people avoided tomatoes because their acidity could potentially leach lead from pewter plates, contributing to concerns about lead poisoning. This explanation remains debated among historians. For many years, tomatoes were viewed more as exotic ornamental plants than as a food. Their bright red and yellow fruits made them popular additions to aristocratic gardens and botanical collections. Over time, this once mistrusted plant transformed from a decorative curiosity into one of the world’s most widely consumed foods. 2/2
TOMATOES (Solanum lycopersicum) Nightshade Family (Solanaceae) Toxins & Defense Compounds: Tomatine (glycoalkaloid) Tomatoes contain tomatine, a glycoalkaloid that acts as a natural defense compound to help protect the plant from pests, fungi, bacteria, and other threats. Tomatine is found in higher concentrations in: Leaves Stems Unripe (green) tomatoes In excessive amounts, tomatine exposure may cause symptoms such as: Nausea Vomiting Stomach cramps Diarrhea Tomatine has also been discussed as a possible contributor to worsening symptoms in some individuals with laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). Because tomatoes are naturally acidic, eliminating or reducing tomato intake may improve symptoms for some people with reflux-related conditions. Tomato Lectins: Tomatoes also contain lectins, including tomato agglutinin, which are found in higher amounts in the skin and seeds. Experimental studies have shown that tomato lectin can bind to intestinal epithelial cells and interact with carbohydrate structures on the intestinal surface. This fruit also made its way into one of America’s most abominable condiments: Ketchup - Loaded with sugar and vinegar to keep it shelf- stable and more appetizing it was also used as a replacement for marinara (ketchup on pasta) to feed the plebs during the Great Depression. In Eastern European countries, due to food shortages this same practice became common under communist rule. For some families, it has persisted across generations, rooted by the lasting effects of historical famines and generational trauma, which I’ll cover later. 1/2
