Why do Singaporean men (especially incels) keep using NS as a “GOTCHA!” for feminism? 🤔🤔🤔 In online forums, a predictable script plays out whenever women raise issues of gender inequality (whether it is the motherhood penalty, workplace discrimination, or sexual harassment) Almost like clockwork, a voice will intervene with a single, conversation-ending trump card: "what about NS?" 🤓 This essay argues that National Service (NS) has been weaponised as the ultimate cultural "gotcha" in Singapore, and is hence, the biggest factor stopping Singapore’s gender discourse ➡️ “What about NS???” is a reflexively deployed zero-sum card designed to immediately halt, diminish, and completely invalidate women’s lived experiences. We SHOULD be having nuanced conversation about systemic gender norms But instead, it devolves into a game of oppression Olympics, where two mandatory years of military service are leveraged to bankrupt any legitimate grievance a woman might bring to the table (and get this: NS being a system designed by MEN, but used to blame…women?? 🤔) We are not arguing that National Service is tiring, or that men in Singapore do not feel the effects of a 2-year career delay. We are arguing that NS is MOSTLY being brought up when women voice out their grievances first 🤔 (Like men bringing up “when’s international men’s day?” mostly during International Women’s Day 🫩) This rhetorical retaliation relies on a fundamentally flawed premise: that women are somehow the architects of conscription. The historical reality is that NS was conceptualised, instituted, and maintained entirely by male political leaders within a patriarchal state apparatus designed around classic notions of national defense and traditional gender roles 😐😐😐 Blaming Singaporean women for not serving in uniform, or expecting them to forever defer their civil rights until they do, redirects accountability away from the state and onto fellow citizens who had NO say in the policy's design 👎 At its core, NS is indeed a genuine form of structural inequality and an undeniable sacrifice: Requiring young men to set aside two formative years of their early adulthood, defer their higher education or entry into the workforce, and remain liable for reserve cycles into middle age creates real material, economic, and psychological costs 👍👍 Denying the above reality is both unhelpful and untrue. However, the tragedy of the "NS gotcha" is that it weaponises genuine male vulnerability not to seek actual systemic reform or healing, but to enforce silence amongst women 👎👎 Instead of examining how conscription restricts male agency or advocating for better support and compensation for conscripts, men’s experience is reduced to a cudgel used to beat down legitimate discourse on female inequality 😐 Conscription becomes this emotional currency spent exclusively on invalidating women 🐈‍⬛ When men deploy NS to diminish issues like the pay gap, unpaid caregiving, or gender-based violence, they trap the conversation in a cycle of grievance where no one actually wins 😐 These men need to recognise that Singapore’s gender problem is not mutually exclusive: a society can simultaneously honor the immense sacrifices of its male conscripts while actively dismantling the structural barriers that hold its female citizens back ✅ Until Singaporean gender discourse moves past this knee-jerk retaliation, both men and women are trapped in the very patriarchal frameworks that disadvantage them.
