Biography - Edition: 26 📝 Rosalind Elsie Franklin (1920–1958) was a British chemist and X-ray crystallographer whose research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double-helix structure 🧬. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge, she earned her PhD in 1945 on coal's physical chemistry and later studied X-ray diffraction in Paris. In 1951, while at King’s College London, she captured "Photograph 51," an X-ray image that revealed DNA’s helical structure, providing key evidence for Watson and Crick's DNA model in 1953 🔬. Despite her significant contributions, Franklin's work went largely unrecognized during her lifetime. Her colleague Maurice Wilkins shared her photograph with Watson and Crick without her consent, leading to their Nobel Prize-winning model. She died of ovarian cancer in 1958 at age 37 🎗️. The 1962 Nobel Prize was awarded to Watson, Crick, and Wilkins, with no posthumous recognition for Franklin, whose contributions remained overlooked for decades.
