[13/08/2026] Israeli authorities forcibly closed six schools run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in occupied Jerusalem, depriving around 800 children of continuing their education. The closures followed orders issued by the Israeli Ministry of Education, based on two laws passed by the Knesset that restrict UNRWA’s operations in areas Israel considers to be under its sovereignty. Three of the closed schools are located in Shuafat Refugee Camp, while the others are in the neighborhoods of Silwan, Sur Baher and Wadi al Joz. The schools provided education based on the Palestinian curriculum to students between the ages of approximately 6 and 15.

[12/08/2026] According to the Religious Freedom Data Centre, as reported by Middle East Monitor on June 11, 2026, Israeli attacks and harassment targeting Palestinian Christians and Christian religious sites have rised, documenting more than 88 incidents since the start of 2026, including 63 in the second quarter. The cases included spitting, verbal abuse, racist graffiti, vandalism of cemeteries, crosses, statues and gravestones, and the desecration of religious sites. Most incidents were recorded in Jerusalem’s Old City, Mount Zion and around the Armenian Patriarchate. Rights advocates also criticized Israeli police handling of complaints, saying many cases are closed without results. Church representatives reported additional attacks on religious institutions and property, including damaged vehicles, toppled crosses and objects thrown at monasteries and Christian guesthouses.
