🇫🇷 Updates for 2026/27 tuition fees and whom does it concern? French Higher Education, Research and Space Minister Philippe Baptiste announced on 21 April that almost all non-EU students coming to France for the 2026/27 academic year will be required to pay annual tuition of €2,895 (US$3,391) for a bachelor’s programme and €3,941 (US$4,617) for a master’s degree. Since 2019, French universities have been encouraged – but not obliged – to set non-EU tuition fees higher than for other students. The majority have continued to charge the base rate of €178 (US$195) and €254 (US$280) per year at the bachelor’s and master’s level, respectively. Their decision to opt out has been based on a belief in equal access to higher education regardless of where a student is from. As of the announcement, universities no longer have a say in whether or not they choose to differentiate non-EU fees. The fee hike does not affect current non-EU students, but it does come in the middle of the application cycle for the start of the 2026/27 academic year in September, which critics say will introduce uncertainty and confusion for both applicants and institutions alike. Are there exceptions? No more than 10% of students will be exempted, with most exceptions for scholarship holders and those facing personal hardship. Вот кстати Студента взяли в Оксфордский Уни в том числе (ну с таким профилем, неудивительно🥹) 🎉 Но он выбрал ДААД и вроде едет в Германию 😁 Потому что полное покрытие + хороший уни > престиж + частичное покрытие Такие вот пироги, я в свое время в оч престижный универ во Франции не смогла поехать так как мне не покрыли стипендию (которую давали видимо чисто по гпа). Часть 1. Очень много всего происходит и если честно я всю эту весну 26го года, хотелось просто все бросить и взять one way airplane ticket в Казахстан и больше не возвращаться ни в Германию ни в ЕС. Я почти каждый день звонила своей двойняшке сестре жаловаться (она живет в Алматы). Сейчас я пишу тэзис и мне надо написать 60 страниц с данными с экспериментов которые я собирала весь год. Без всяких аппендиксов, 60 чистых страниц. Но это реалистично. Параллельно доделываю эксперименты. Кстати некоторые у меня все таки удались, и я просто в восторге! В этом месяце было много сложностей, у меня впервые в жизни завелась контаминация (нежелательный рост микроорганизмов в клеточных культурах), и не один раз, а аж два! (Мы вообще не используем антибиотик так как это чувствительные клетки) On top of that, на меня повысила голос супервизорка при других, и не впервые; мне не совсем повезло с супервизоркой. Но я рада что меня много кто из лабы поддержал и одна женщина постдок даже вступились за меня и пошла рассказал ситуацию самой главной в лабе. Я все это время тихонько это всё suck up, и ничего никому не говорила, потому что закончить успешно стажировку для меня было важнее самоуважения :( В Казахстане, тоже супер токсик лабы встречала но в Европе культура совсем другая. Тут все таки нельзя так с людьми обращаться. Даже если существует иерархия в академии. Ситуация настолько эскалировалась ,что главная в лабе (lab head) хотела полностью убрать мою супервизорку из моего проекта. Я у своей супервизорки первая менти. Я не думаю что она плохой человек, она много мне в чем помогала и когда узнала о всей каше с визой была супер эмпатичной и полезной. Но из-за её нетерпимости к моим вопросам, в какой то момент было тревожно задавать любые вопросы, хотя я все лишь студентка и много методов в молекулярной биологии делаю впервые. И супервизоры на то и нужны чтобы отвечать на ваши вопросы. Тем не менее, мне очень повезло с лаб хэд так как тут стажерам магистрантам вообще рабочего контракта не дают. А она мне сделала контракт на весь год, даже не смотря на то что у меня есть стипендия ДААД и в Дрездене сравнительно дешево жить. Видимо, просто потому что я не из ЕС. Мне эктсенднули контракт на еще месяц и немножко добавили денег, так как период стипендии (и виза) заканчивается. Так что maybe I am homeless starting from September (я съезжаю со своей квартиры, думаю вообще угрожать судом за такую несправедливо высокую аренду). Either way, I am not unemployed 🎉 My student visa expires September 30th, but migration office is quite understanding and they will give me some time to collect my documents since I am skilled worker (well let’s see how it goes on actual appointment, it will be this month). I thought I’d be deported the second my visa expires lol. Работники в миграционке, по статистике, достаточно большая часть, дискриминируют и грубят в той или иной степени. Но даже в таком случае я защищена макс планком, так как я написала доверенность местному international office to speak on my behalf if immigration office would be unnecessarily difficult. В последний месяц я работаю минимум 8 часов в день, иногда нон стоп, не всегда успеваю элементарно покушать, просто потому что ворклоад всей стажировки был непропорционально распределен. В начале супервизорка была супер занята и первые 3 месяца, я делала ровным счетом ничего), и теперь компенсирую это и нередко работаю и по выходным. The same goes for volunteering: volunteering at the UN > volunteering at a local organisation (though the latter is more likely to be impactful, but it’s a trade-off). International organisations >> national organisations (Google prestigious international organisations in Kazakhstan/your country and keep applying). Leadership! President/Head of Department >> member. Take easier courses/from easier professors to boost your GPA (yeah yeah, challenge is cool, but it’s a long-term strategy). Because grade deflation is not considered (even if it’s easier to get a 4.0 at ENU than at NU, no one will consider this vast difference for scholarships). Good GPA (3.5+) + strong experience >>> perfect GPA + some experience. If you are in STEM, choose a lab that publishes (internationally!!) but also balance that with the quality of the lab (learning a lot and having one good publication is better than doing multiple insignificant things and having five papers). But academia and industry don’t care about quality sometimes :( So publishing anywhere is always better than having no publications. Start stalking people on LinkedIn! Do you want to go to Harvard? Go and look at people from KAZAKHSTAN and similar backgrounds who have made it, and aim for slightly better qualifications. Do not compare yourselves with people from the USA and the UK who are doing degrees at Oxford. It’s not the same for you. It’s not nearly the same for you. There is class and passport privilege :D

But if you are genuinely interested in what’s going on, I could write more in detail about it. Please let me know 😁 Over the next couple of posts, I would like to summarise what I think is important in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years of your bachelor’s degree, how to choose a master’s program, and highlight the most significant points of intersection. There is a lot said about it in this channel, and a lot posted about full-coverage scholarships that are the same from year to year. I will try to update their deadlines and share some updates regarding possible funding (in recent years, Norway and France have made major changes to their education fee policies regarding international students, so it’s quite hard to find a full-coverage, low-cost program). I receive a lot of messages every week regarding education in the EU. In my experience and personal opinion: In years 1 and 2, you should genuinely focus on getting an education. So, your studies and grades. GPA matters, a lot. It doesn’t make much difference after 3.67+, but there is always room for improvement if your GPA is lower than that. Don’t think about getting internships in your first year or doing time-demanding volunteering until you figure out how to study and find the right approach for yourself. If you have a mental health condition that hinders your progress, obviously only medical and therapeutic treatment can help. Sometimes it isn’t a lack of motivation or discipline; it’s ADHD or depression, which is not uncommon, just unrecognised in the post-Soviet space. As a person who studied molecular biology, I can claim that it rarely goes away by itself, and it will impact all aspects of your life. If your English level is lower than B2–C1, it’s time to invest in your language skills. Starting in year 2 of your UG, you should start looking for internships or jobs. You probably won’t get paid at first, but we all start somewhere. Try to stay relevant to the major you are studying. (So you wouldn’t work in customer service if you study engineering or political science.) Try different topics; you can even intern in several places simultaneously. Your bachelor’s degree is there to give you a sense of direction for your future specialisation. I don’t support unpaid internships, and it’s a privilege to dedicate time to something unpaid if one is supported by their parents. But there is always a little we can do to start, even if it’s just 3–4 hours per week. You should have a solid CV with everything you’ve done so far (you can include some awards or extracurriculars from school when you are in your 1st or 2nd year of UG). Year 3 UG, it’s time! It’s time to take electives if you have decided to take a completely different direction in the future, or to take major-specific electives that are highly relevant to your future master’s degree field (a master’s degree covers a narrower topic than a bachelor’s degree does). If you are doing a Bachelor of Arts, it’s nearly impossible to change to a scientific field, but you can always take more maths courses (for example, for data analysis jobs/master’s programs) and compensate with work experience. If you still haven’t started any internships or research, I would strongly advise you to rethink that for the sake of your future. Most of your CV for graduate school/jobs is built during years 2.5–3.5. So it’s definitely a good time to have a place where you would work more or less long-term (1+ year). Summer of year 3 UG! Take your time to consult with and seek advice from your friends, family, and professors about your future career. Get your CV polished! Create a list of programs you would like to apply to. A couple of the most important points for your CV: The prestige of the company/lab matters more than the perfect fit for your desired topic (it shouldn’t be completely off-topic from your major).
