  • Admissions in the Era of AI 🎥 One of the ways to deal with AI-assisted applications and better understand an applicant might be the newly added requirement (it has already been there, but it may become more frequent or become mandatory instead of optional) to submit video responses. Here is one of the colleges that introduced it in this cycle: For students attending high school outside of the United States, Swarthmore has added a new application component. Applicants attending school outside of the U.S., regardless of citizenship, are required to submit one of the following: a Swarthmore Video Response, an English Proficiency Exam Result, or an InitialView video: https://www.swarthmore.edu/admissions-aid/international-students#application P.S. Regardless of your citizenship, if Swarthmore admits you and you applied for financial aid, the College meets 100% of your institutionally determined financial need, covering up to—and including—full annual tuition (with an annual $800 book allowance), fees, housing, food, academic supplies, and some personal expenses.

  • During the meeting of World Economic Forum in September 2024, it was heard that by 2027, 23% of jobs will change, with 69 million new roles anticipated, with 83 million existing ones displaced. This represents a historical jobs transition, and is being driven by new technologies and the long-running impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As technological advancements, economic shifts and the green transition disrupt traditional employment patterns, the ability of workers to transition into new roles is essential for maintaining employment and achieving social mobility. By 2040, the population aged 65+ is forecast to grow by 33% in developed countries, while the working-age population is set to shrink by 4%, creating significant workforce gaps. #foodforthought, source: https://acche.rs/ACCHE_2025/radovi/philosophy/160.pdf

  • I could imagine this excerpt by Ocean Vuong as a #PersonalStatement. Maybe with a bit more sadness than one would want, but he conveys so much not through something grandiose, but through his mother’s hands💔

The University of Chicago Growing up with the tutelage of Gilmore Girls, I picked up wit. My wit was simply a mathematical function: Comedy = f(source material X). Often, this X was politics, a.k.a. the intellectual’s reality show. Soon, my brain began to analyze everything for potential political references, generating witty rejoinders whenever possible. When my father asserted his daily dad joke—“A child is told to get ice, and she points a gun at the water and tells it to ‘freeze!’”—I responded, “That is why we need gun control.” However, to my utter dismay, most of my peers considered me more a court jester than a court advisor, for my humor was not a “serious” hobby. What did a girl need to do to get some respect around here? That was when I found Shreya. Shreya was Vice Head Girl. Shreya was tall and thin and terrifyingly terrific. Everyone—including me—thought Shreya was so smart, so poised, and so worthy of respect and admiration. Shreya participated in Model UN I would participate in Model UN Given my previous knowledge of politics, Model United Nations (MUN) was not difficult—but a more soul-numbing extracurricular activity did not exist. I considered myself an Austen character, restricted by corsets (pantsuits) and the unnatural demands of society (“conduct in committee”). I loved politics, but when I proposed unorthodox solutions to solve problems sustainably, I gained no traction in a room of pantsuited students regurgitating existing policy memos, eyeing only the “Best Delegate” certificate. There was pitifully little original analysis, and my brain, accustomed to independently evaluating and responding to every situation, remained deplorably unstimulated. After such tragically comic events, I usually returned to comedy. On one such occasion, I watched John Oliver deliver a charmingly incisive speech about tax evasion. The next day, casually surfing Twitter, I saw that he had canvassed 70,000 signatures to establish a church named Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption, a publicity stunt intended to demonstrate the ease of tax evasion. This was my Eureka moment. Oliver’s antics were not only hilarious—they also enlightened the public about a heretofore unrecognized problem and galvanized political change. Politics and comedy, far from polar opposites, were more like estranged siblings—more related than they cared to admit. The landscape had changed: I was compelled not only to make jokes about current events, but also to create elaborate comedic content to inspire positive action—good against evil—like my heroes Oliver and Colbert. But what mischief might I make? One night, while watching The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews’ blonde helmet (misplaced metaphor, I know) bore a strange resemblance to another iconic head of hair. I imagined Donald Trump twirling around in a nightgown, singing our rendition of “My Favorite Things.” Things then spiraled pleasantly, and I found myself spending weekends designing, editing, and coordinating a crew of talented peers to shoot satire, recruiting my musically inclined friends and engineering chaos. The results were hilarious—and alarming. Our videos were measured by the number of comments they received on YouTube. I realized that my political satire helped my peers understand democracy, which can be a good thing. When my peers watched my videos and laughed at my jokes, they also started to reflect on the socio-political issues in India, America, and around the world. This deeper engagement—along with laughter, of course—was all the reward I needed. In the coming years, as I digest serious thoughts in hallowed halls, I will also refine this curious capability and continue to harness it to enlighten my fellow men and women. Thanks for listening. Aditi, out.

This conversation, hosted by Harvard Graduate Student Simi Khadra with Harvard professor Michael Puett, explores how deeply our ways of seeing are molded, by culture, history, and the assumptions we inherit without realizing it. Through Chinese philosophy and historiography, we question familiar ideas about identity, achievement, and the pursuit of "finding yourself." What if the self isn't something fixed to discover, but something we're constantly shaping through how we engage with the world? We also consider how modern life may still be driven by an older anxiety, the need to prove ourselves, and what it might look like to step out of that loop. Ultimately, this conversation returns to a simple but demanding truth: before we can change how we live, we have to change how we see. That shift doesn't come from one big moment, but from small, daily ways of paying attention, responding, and breaking out of the patterns we fall into. 🔗 https://youtu.be/aPTa03G8SK8?si=EFqyFQRTPQOt0vK3 Strongly recommend to watch/listen!
