*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata Purāṇa) *ŚB 7.9.28* एवं जनं निपतितं प्रभवाहिकूपे कामाभिकाममनु य: प्रपतन्प्रसङ्गात् । कृत्वात्मसात् सुरर्षिणा भगवन्गृहीत: सोऽहं कथं नु विसृजे तव भृत्यसेवाम् evaṁ janaṁ nipatitaṁ prabhavāhi-kūpe kāmābhikāmam anu yaḥ prapatan prasaṅgāt kṛtvātmasāt surarṣiṇā bhagavan gṛhītaḥ so ’haṁ kathaṁ nu visṛje tava bhṛtya-sevām *Translation* Prahlāda Mahārāja said : *_My dear Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, because of my association with material desires, one after another, I was gradually falling into a blind well full of snakes, following the general populace. But Your servant Nārada kindly accepted me as his disciple and instructed me how to achieve this transcendental position. Therefore, my first duty is to serve him. How could I leave his service?_*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata Purāṇa) *ŚB 7.9.25* कुत्राशिष: श्रुतिसुखा मृगतृष्णिरूपा: क्‍वेदं कलेवरमशेषरुजां विरोह: । निर्विद्यते न तु जनो यदपीति विद्वान् कामानलं मधुलवै: शमयन्दुरापै: ॥ kutrāśiṣaḥ śruti-sukhā mṛgatṛṣṇi-rūpāḥ kvedaṁ kalevaram aśeṣa-rujāṁ virohaḥ nirvidyate na tu jano yad apīti vidvān kāmānalaṁ madhu-lavaiḥ śamayan durāpaiḥ *Translation* *_In this material world, every living entity desires some future happiness, which is exactly like a mirage in the desert. Where is water in the desert, or, in other words, where is happiness in this material world? As for this body, what is its value? It is merely a source of various diseases. The so-called philosophers, scientists and politicians know this very well, but nonetheless they aspire for temporary happiness. Happiness is very difficult to obtain, but because they are unable to control their senses, they run after the so-called happiness of the material world and never come to the right conclusion._*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata Purāṇa) *ŚB 7.6.25* तुष्टे च तत्र किमलभ्यमनन्त आद्ये किं तैर्गुणव्यतिकरादिह ये स्वसिद्धा: । धर्मादय: किमगुणेन च काङ्‌क्षितेन सारं जुषां चरणयोरुपगायतां न: ॥ tuṣṭe ca tatra kim alabhyam ananta ādye kiṁ tair guṇa-vyatikarād iha ye sva-siddhāḥ dharmādayaḥ kim aguṇena ca kāṅkṣitena sāraṁ juṣāṁ caraṇayor upagāyatāṁ naḥ *Translation* *_Nothing is unobtainable for devotees who have satisfied the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the cause of all causes, the original source of everything. The Lord is the reservoir of unlimited spiritual qualities. For devotees, therefore, who are transcendental to the modes of material nature, what is the use of following the principles of religion, economic development, sense gratification and liberation, which are all automatically obtainable under the influence of the modes of nature? We devotees always glorify the lotus feet of the Lord, and therefore we need not ask for anything in terms of dharma, kāma, artha and mokṣa._*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta » Madhya-līlā » CHAPTER ELEVEN *CC Madhya 11.8* niṣkiñcanasya bhagavad-bhajanonmukhasya pāraṁ paraṁ jigamiṣor bhava-sāgarasya sandarśanaṁ viṣayiṇām atha yoṣitāṁ ca hā hanta hanta viṣa-bhakṣaṇato ’py asādhu *Translation* *_Alas, for a person who is seriously desiring to cross the material ocean and engage in the transcendental loving service of the Lord without material motives, seeing a materialist engaged in sense gratification or seeing a woman who is similarly interested is more abominable than drinking poison willingly_*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* *ŚB 1.5.18* तस्यैव हेतो: प्रयतेत कोविदो न लभ्यते यद्भ्रमतामुपर्यध: । तल्लभ्यते दु:खवदन्यत: सुखं कालेन सर्वत्र गभीररंहसा ॥ tasyaiva hetoḥ prayateta kovido na labhyate yad bhramatām upary adhaḥ tal labhyate duḥkhavad anyataḥ sukhaṁ kālena sarvatra gabhīra-raṁhasā *Translation* *_Persons who are actually intelligent and philosophically inclined should endeavor only for that purposeful end which is not obtainable even by wandering from the topmost planet [Brahmaloka] down to the lowest planet [Pātāla]. As far as happiness derived from sense enjoyment is concerned, it can be obtained automatically in course of time, just as in course of time we obtain miseries even though we do not desire them._*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (Bhāgavata Purāṇa) » Canto 1: Creation » CHAPTER FIVE *ŚB 1.5.17* त्यक्त्वा स्वधर्मं चरणाम्बुजं हरे- र्भजन्नपक्‍वोऽथ पतेत्ततो यदि । यत्र क्‍व वाभद्रमभूदमुष्य किं को वार्थ आप्तोऽभजतां स्वधर्मत: ॥ tyaktvā sva-dharmaṁ caraṇāmbujaṁ harer bhajann apakvo ’tha patet tato yadi yatra kva vābhadram abhūd amuṣya kiṁ ko vārtha āpto ’bhajatāṁ sva-dharmataḥ *Translation* *_One who has forsaken his material occupations to engage in the devotional service of Lord KṚṢṆA may sometimes fall down while in an immature stage, yet there is no danger of his being unsuccessful. On the other hand, a nondevotee, though fully engaged in occupational duties, does not gain anything._*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* *ŚB 1.5.16* विचक्षणोऽस्यार्हति वेदितुं विभो- रनन्तपारस्य निवृत्तित: सुखम् । प्रवर्तमानस्य गुणैरनात्मन- स्ततो भवान्दर्शय चेष्टितं विभो: ॥ vicakṣaṇo ’syārhati vedituṁ vibhor ananta-pārasya nivṛttitaḥ sukham pravartamānasya guṇair anātmanas tato bhavān darśaya ceṣṭitaṁ vibhoḥ *Translation* *_The Supreme Lord is unlimited. Only a very expert personality, retired from the activities of material happiness, deserves to understand this knowledge of spiritual values. Therefore those who are not so well situated, due to material attachment, should be shown the ways of transcendental realization, by Your Goodness, through descriptions of the transcendental activities of the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa._*

What, is the use of fruitive activities, which are naturally painful from the very beginning and temporary by nature, if they are not utilized for the devotional service of Lord Kṛṣṇa?_*

*VEDIC WISDOM OF THE DAY* *ŚB 1.5.11* तद्वाग्विसर्गो जनताघविप्लवो यस्मिन् प्रतिश्लोकमबद्धवत्यपि । नामान्यनन्तस्य यशोऽङ्कितानि यत् श‍ृण्वन्ति गायन्ति गृणन्ति साधव: ॥ tad-vāg-visargo janatāgha-viplavo yasmin prati-ślokam abaddhavaty api nāmāny anantasya yaśo ’ṅkitāni yat śṛṇvanti gāyanti gṛṇanti sādhavaḥ *Translation* *_That literature which is full of descriptions of the transcendental glories of the name, fame, forms, pastimes, etc., of the unlimited Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa is a different creation, full of transcendental words directed toward bringing about a revolution in the impious lives of this world’s misdirected civilization. Such transcendental literatures, even though imperfectly composed, are heard, sung and accepted by all pure devotees._*
