What Is Love? | Save My Marriage Seminar, Windhoek | Dr. Julius Kwedhi 📱 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqGW3MrVNNA

  • The call to sacrificial love is a call to imitate Christ, and that is both the most challenging and the most hope-giving aspect of this command. It is challenging because we are all, by nature, self-centered. Our default mode is to seek our own comfort, our own pleasure, our own way. To love sacrificially requires a death to self, a crucifixion of the ego, that goes against every instinct of our fallen nature...Read further here 👇 https://lnkd.in/djv4YbA3

Forgiveness: The Gateway to True Freedom in Marriage At its core, true forgiveness is an act of mercy – a conscious decision not to retaliate or inflict upon others what they might deserve in return. It is the deliberate release of your right to seek vengeance. It means ceasing to mentally replay the hurtful event, refraining from weaponizing it in future arguments, and letting go of the urge to hold it over your spouse's head. It is the courageous declaration, "What you did was wrong, and it hurt me, but I am deliberately choosing to release it and trust God with justice." The process of forgiveness in marriage often unfolds in these steps: 1. Naming the Hurt: 2. Accepting the Hurt is Real 3. Releasing Retaliation, 4. Trusting God with Justice, Healing and Reconciliation, 5. Moving Forward, 6. Seeking External Help (When Necessary): In situations involving real risk to your life or well-being, such as abuse or physical danger, inviting a marriage counselor or involving law enforcement may be necessary. Concerning the last point, I am reminded of an incident from my childhood. A neighbour of ours in Oshifo, Ruacana, a former police officer, once had an argument with his wife at home. In the heat of the conflict, he pulled out his gun and chased her around the house, firing at her until he struck and killed her in broad daylight. My dear friend, you do not need to wait for such a tragedy—or anything resembling it—to unfold in your marriage before you reach out for wise, external help and allow others to walk with you toward safety, healing, and peace. Unequally Yoked: Navigating Spiritual Compatibility in Relationships By Dr. Julius Kwedhi Don't be "unequally yoked." Spiritual compatibility isn't about being identical, but sharing the same ultimate destination & willingness to walk the path with Christ. It's foundational, not superficial. In the exciting journey of finding a life partner, it's easy to get caught up in shared hobbies, interests, and immediate chemistry. While these connections are wonderful, as Christians, we're called to something deeper: spiritual compatibility. The Apostle Paul's wisdom in 2 Corinthians 6:14, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers," isn't a restrictive rule, but a merciful guide to a fulfilling, Christ-centered marriage. Imagine a yoke designed for two oxen to pull together; if they're not matched in strength and direction, the work becomes erratic, unproductive, and painful for both. Your marriage is a lifelong journey, and a shared spiritual foundation ensures you're pulling in the same direction towards God's ultimate purpose for your lives. This isn't just about church attendance; it's about aligning on ultimate authority, life purpose, and how you'll navigate suffering together. When crisis hits, will you both turn to God, or will you find yourselves making decisions from fundamentally different starting points? For those already in complex situations, the message is one of grace and wisdom. If you're single, choose wisely: find someone whose ultimate allegiance is to Jesus Christ, with whom you can pray, worship, and grow spiritually. If you're married to someone with different beliefs, your role is to model your faith beautifully, pray, and trust God's work. Marriage is the most significant decision after your relationship with God; choose a partner whose spiritual foundation is strong enough to handle that sacred trust. Are you wrestling with what spiritual compatibility truly means for your relationships? Communication: The Foundation of a Thriving Marriage by Dr. Julius Kwedhi Communication, at its core, is far more than just talking. It's the profound willingness to allow oneself to be truly seen, to articulate one's deepest thoughts and feelings, and perhaps most importantly, to genuinely listen—to truly listen—when your spouse speaks. As the notable quote from James 1:19 (BSB) reminds us, we should "...be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger." This wisdom is not just ancient scripture; it's a blueprint for marital harmony. It's the bridge that connects two souls, allowing them to navigate life's complexities as one. One of the deepest needs within a marriage is to feel understood. It's not necessarily about agreement, but about comprehension. When your spouse truly grasps your emotions and feelings, your needs, your fears – something profound shifts within you. It's in that moment of understanding that true connection and intimacy begin to flourish. Effective listening involves: - Making eye contact: Showing engagement and respect. - Not interrupting: Allowing your spouse to fully express themselves. - Not planning your response: Truly focusing on understanding, not rebutting. - Reflecting back what you heard: "What I'm hearing is..." to confirm understanding. - Asking clarifying questions: "Help me understand..." to delve deeper. - Giving your spouse the benefit of a doubt: Approaching their words with grace and a positive assumption. Remember, effective communication is not achieved through finger-pointing, fault-finding, tearing down, insulting, or humiliating each other. You are not perfect, and neither is your spouse. Extending the same grace and mercy you desire for yourself is paramount. - What communication patterns did you learn in your family of origin? How do they impact your marriage today? - What does your spouse need to feel truly understood by you? - What vulnerable truth have you been avoiding saying in your marriage but needs to be said, and what steps can you take to share it in love? The Humility Principle: Stepping Down For A Stronger Marriage Julius Kwedhi, MD While communication skills, financial planning, and even romantic love are undeniably important, they are all secondary to the foundational quality of humility. Humility is the engine that allows you to admit fault, to truly listen when your spouse expresses concern, and to prevent your opinions from becoming weapons. Humility, far from being a sign of weakness, is the profound antidote to contempt. It, in fact, embodies true strength and honesty. It dares to say: "I could be wrong. Your perspective matters. I need you to challenge me." This perspective is not just revolutionary; it's transformative. Cultivating humility in marriage requires consistent self-reflection. - In what areas do you struggle most to stay humble in your marriage? - What does your spouse need you to understand that you keep dismissing? - What would change if you treated your spouse's perspective as equally valid to your own? Intimacy: A Learned Language, Not an Instinct One of the greatest misconceptions is that sexual satisfaction is instinctive. As Ed and Gaye Wheat discuss in Intended for Pleasure, sexual satisfaction is learned. It requires communication, patience, vulnerability, and often, education. Many Christian couples enter marriage sexually frustrated because they were taught nothing about how to enjoy each other, and then were told not to talk about it. This silence breeds shame and misunderstanding. Here is the hard truth that must be embraced: If you don’t know your spouse’s body, you don’t truly know your spouse. Sexual intimacy demands vulnerability unlike any other. It is the moment when you are completely exposed—not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. That very vulnerability is the crucible that forges the deepest marital bond. As the popular definition suggests, intimacy is truly “into-me-see.” Read further: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/into-me-see-reclaiming-sacred-gift-sexual-intimacy-kwedhi-md-mph-5haef/

🔥 From "I" to "We": The Art of Leaving and Cleaving 🔥 The phrase "Leave and cleave" (Genesis 2:24) is read at every wedding, but few couples grasp its revolutionary demand. It's not just poetic; it's a terrifying, necessary shift in loyalty that determines the success of your marriage. Let us break down why many marriages are suffocating under the weight of unmeshed families and how to truly become "one flesh." 🔑 The Two Essential Steps for a Strong Marriage: 1. LEAVING (The Severing) ✂️ Definition: Severing the primary emotional and relational bond with your parents. Reality Check: This doesn't mean dishonoring them. It means they are no longer your first call, your primary counsel, or your ultimate authority. Your spouse is. The Danger: Many marriages are "franchises of the original family business" because one or both partners still seek parental approval over spousal unity. 2. CLEAVING (The Adhering) 🔗 Definition: Adhering, sticking, or bonding to your spouse. The Hebrew word (dabaq) is the same word used for glue. The Provocation: Many couples successfully leave their parents but fail to truly cleave to each other, leaving them in relational free-fall—lonely even when sharing a bed. The Goal: Merging identities, purposes, resources, and futures to become "one flesh"—a profound mystery (Ephesians 5:32). 🛡 Protecting Your Covenant: Practical Action Your marriage is a covenant, not a convenience. Protecting it requires intentional redirection of loyalty. Identify Competing Loyalties: Have an honest conversation this week about whose voices still hold too much authority in your decisions (finances, holidays, parenting). Practice Unity: Commit to making decisions as a unified team, even if it means having the difficult conversation: "Mom/Dad, my spouse and I are choosing to handle this differently." Choose Your Team: Be willing to disappoint family members sometimes to protect the integrity and unity of your marriage. 💡 Clear Takeaway: You cannot fully give yourself to your spouse if part of you is still seeking approval from the person who raised you. True marriage requires courageously disappointing others to prioritize your primary bond. If you are struggling with family interference, share this post with your spouse and start the conversation today. 💬 Discussion Question: In what area of your life (finances, holidays, time) is your parent still the "primary authority" instead of your spouse? #Marriage #Family #LeaveAndCleave #RelationshipGoals #ChristianLife #Unity Bishop Dr. Julius Kwedhi, Marriage consultant, Cardiovascular surgeon Join the discussion: @bishopdrkwedhidiscipleship Protect your marriage: @SokhraniMoyBrak Read Blog on LinkedIn

Beauty Fades, Money Vanishes—What Doesn't? Dr. Julius Kwedhi @BishopDrKwedhiDiscipleship Notable Marriage Quote: "You can be the most beautiful woman in the world and the richest man in the world, and none of that guarantees you'll stay married until death do you part." Scripture: 1 Peter 3:3-4; Proverbs 31:30; Matthew 6:31-33 Opening Reflection Consider the story of one of the world's richest men and a woman crowned the most beautiful in the United Kingdom. They had everything the world says should make a marriage unbreakable—extraordinary wealth and extraordinary beauty. Yet they couldn't make it work. Their marriage ended in divorce, just like his first, second, third, fourth, and fifth marriages. This is the inconvenient truth the world refuses to teach: External beauty and financial security cannot anchor a soul. They're like building a house on sand. The first storm collapses everything. The Deeper Truth When a woman enters marriage thinking, "If I stay beautiful, he'll stay faithful," she's already lost. When a man enters thinking, "If I make enough money, everything else will fall into place," he's already building on faulty ground. Gary Chapman's The 5 Love Languages teaches us the subjective dimension of love, that genuine connection happens through acts of service, quality time, physical touch, words of affirmation, and receiving gifts—not through physical appearance or bank statements. A woman's love language might be quality time, but he's only bringing paychecks. A man's love language might be physical touch, but she's preoccupied with financial security. Two lonely people sharing a bed. If you are in courtship, examine your real motivations: Are you marrying for a visa? For financial security? For children? For image? If so, what happens when that promise—real or imagined—evaporates? The only things that do endure in marriage are spiritual. Holiness. Faithfulness. Sacrifice. Humility. The character that reflects Christ's nature. When two people commit to becoming more godly together, when they prioritize righteousness over Instagram aesthetics, when they value their covenant over their career—that produces longevity. The Paradox Here's what makes people uncomfortable: the couples who report the greatest satisfaction aren't necessarily the most physically attractive or the wealthiest. They're the ones who've learned to love each other's souls—the real person beneath the performance. They've aged together, failed together, grown together. Beauty has become deeper because it's tested and refined by reality. Emerson Eggerichs points out in Love & Respect that a woman's deepest need is often to feel loved, and a man's is often to feel respected. Neither requires a six-figure salary or a magazine cover. They require presence, understanding, and genuine effort. Practical Action This week, each of you write down: What attracted me to my spouse beyond appearance or money? What character trait of theirs makes me want to be better? Share your answers. This is your real foundation. Prayer Lord, forgive me for buying into a culture that measures marriage success by externals. Help me see my spouse as You do—with deep affection for their character, their growth, their heart. Guard our marriage against the lie that beauty or money can save us. Build us on the rock of Your Word instead. Amen. Marriage is God's Idea, Not Yours Dr. Julius Kwedhi @BishopDrKwedhiDiscipleshi Notable Marriage Quote: "Marriage is not an invention of man but the design of God—and God designs what lasts." Scripture: Genesis 1:26-27, 2:18-24 Opening Reflection Before you said "I do," before you swiped right, before the dress, the cake, and the first dance—God had already thought about you. Let that sink in. Marriage wasn't born in a boardroom of angels brainstorming ways to make humans miserable. It was conceived in the heart of a God who looked at Adam and said, "It's not good for you to be alone. I'm going to give you a helper, a companion, a partner in this grand adventure." Your marriage is not a human achievement. You didn't invent it. You didn't engineer it. And here's the provocative part: you can't save it by yourself either. This is the liberation and the responsibility that comes with understanding marriage as God's design. The Deeper Truth In Genesis 1:27, we see that both male and female are created in God's image. Not the man first, then the woman as an afterthought. Both image-bearers. Both beloved. When God brought Eve to Adam and called her his "helper" (Hebrew: ezer), He was using the same word He uses for Himself—God is our Helper in times of need. Marriage, then, is God helping you become more like Him through another person. God's sovereignty over marriage means His purposes must take preeminence. Gary Thomas reminds us in his work Sacred Marriage that marriage isn't primarily about making us happy—it's about making us holy. This is revolutionary. Most couples enter marriage asking, "Will this person make me complete?" The better question is: "Will this person help me become more like Christ?" When you make God's glory the centerpiece of your marriage instead of your comfort, everything shifts. Your spouse isn't responsible for your fulfillment. God is. Your spouse is a partner in a higher mission—to reflect the character of Christ to a watching world. Practical Action Before your next argument, before your next compromise about money or intimacy or where to spend Thanksgiving, ask yourself: Does this decision move us toward God's glory or away from it? Does this choice reflect the image of God or the patterns of this world? Write down what you discover. Prayer Father, help me understand that my marriage belongs to You first. Release me from the burden of trying to complete my spouse, and help me focus on becoming more like Christ so that together we might bring glory to Your name. Give us the wisdom to build on Your foundation, not on beauty, wealth, or feelings. Amen. Scriptures for Further Reading: - Proverbs 31:10-11 - Ephesians 5:25-27 - 1 Peter 3:1-7 - Malachi 2:14-16 Discussion Questions - What brought you into marriage—God's vision or your own? - How does it change your perspective knowing marriage is about making you holy, not necessarily happy? - What does it look like to pursue God's glory in your marriage this week?
