Here’s some advice: 🔹 Build a good rapport You and your student’s motivation level depends very much on how you two get along. Be professional friends with your student. Being too informal can be a problem because you’re getting paid. 🔹 Deal with needs and expectations Find out what your student wants and needs with a needs analysis. Be clear that you’re not just providing a paid service. Learning a language needs your student’s active involvement. 🔹 Share the power One-on-one classes are not your ego show. Put your student in the driving seat. Give plenty of choices when it comes to materials and ways to practice. Plan and assess together. Here’s what you should keep in mind: 🔹 Keep moving Kids want to move, so don’t go against their nature. Let them run to the flashcards and use plenty of TPR in the process. 🔹 Use sentences The biggest problem with flashcards is that teachers teach only words with them. Make it communicative and speak in sentences! 🔹 Change patterns To keep the kids interested you need to switch patterns every couple of minutes. Hold the flashcards up or down, run towards them, search them – don’t get stuck with one style. ❗️Do not think the children must speak in order to learn. Focus on common errors rather than individual ones. 🔹 Create a post-activity about the errors. This can be simple feedback or some form of guessing activity, either for group work, homework or as a grammar auction. ❗️ Make sure your feedback doesn’t hurt anyone. What does that mean and what is wrong with that? ❓What does it mean to “explain a topic”? ❗️It’s basically a teacher-centred way to start a class. You tell the students what the topic is and they listen. Perhaps you even start teaching vocabulary or grammar at this early point. ❓What’s the problem with that? ❗️A topic is not something you explain but rather something you work on. Students will find too much explanation boring and skipping the presentation stage may be a bad idea. ❓What to do instead? ❗️Try eliciting instead of explaining. Make your students feel excited about the new topic by letting them make guesses. Here are 3 agreeable principles of grammar teaching: 🔹 From control to feedback Grammar teaching should solve problems, not create problems. There’s no reason why you should teach rules that your students don’t seem to have problems with. Let them make mistakes and then work on those mistakes. 🔹 From sentence to context “I did my homework” or “I’ve done my homework” – which is correct? Both, depending on the context. Stop letting your students make up meaningless sentences but provide them with topics for a context to practice in. 🔹 From understanding to using Many students have had years of grammar teaching but still make basic grammar mistakes. If you say YES … … you’re no stranger to the concept of immersion. You know that language learning must be meaningful and is often coincidental. When taught in English, physics and geography classes are great places to learn English! If you say NO … … perhaps you survived learning English the hard way with years of grammar classes and you’re still thankful for the “foundation” it gave you. Unfortunately, most students are not deeply interested in linguistics, and why should they? If you say IT DEPENDS … … you probably want to be on the safe side. Of course it’s never wrong to say it depends, and ideally students have all types of classes.
