Tatar Intelligence VS AI Slop Episode 01 - monthly VR subscription was invented in 19th century! There's too much AI Slop online and people claiming they invented something new. So I'm going to counter this menace by composing texts with my natural Tatar Intelligence and grounding them in my favorite research area, Media Archaeology. In case the latter sounds weird to you - it is a practice of understanding the so-called "New Media" through a prism of historical enquiry into previous communication technologies (both human and non-human). The sweetest practical application of the fruits that Media Archaeology generously bears, of course, is slapping facts in the face of ignorant people pretending they invented something. There is also another, more meaningful application - building a strong foundation for one's practice, finding resonance with brilliant like-minded engineers, artists and scientists who lived centuries ago. Today I want to share a story of The Stereoscopic Magazine - a regular subscription-based journal printed monthly in the middle of 19th century. Each issue contained several stereoscopic views of cultural and natural artifacts such as Greenwich Observatory or Tasmanian Tree Ferns. The photographs were accompanied by descriptive articles and could be viewed through a compact stereoscope. It was a collaboration of Lovell Reeve, A.J. Melhuish and James Glaisher - three of them combined their expertise in photography, printing and publishing which helped them to sustain the journal from 1858 till 1865. Looking at the 19th century stereoscope you can clearly see that its not much different from modern VR headset. In the same manner many other challenges that modern VR enthusiasts face in relation to content creation, viewing and distribution are essentially the same questions that our London trio asked themselves back then. So doing research on this and similar stories can really bring a lot of value for those who do VR today. After having such a nice consultancy call with ::vtol:: recently, I decided to keep the pace and yesterday had another fruitful conversation with my another old friend Ksusha, widely known by her channel MOTYLYOK We discussed my concept for a new artwork that I will be displaying later this fall.
