⬛ A year ago, Davyd Chychkan, a Ukrainian anarchist and graphic artist, was killed in action Davyd Chychkan (1986–2025) was a Ukrainian anarchist artist and a key figure in the contemporary anti-fascist and punk movements. He was known for his graphic art and graffiti, which had a clear left-wing orientation. With the outbreak of full-scale war, Davyd supported the anti-authoritarian resistance against Russian aggression. For him, as for many Ukrainian leftists, the struggle against the Russian army was a direct continuation of the struggle against neo-fascism, imperialism and chauvinism. In 2024, he finally managed to enlist as a volunteer in the Ukrainian army. He died on 9 August 2025 on the Zaporizhzhia front, on the very same ground where Nestor Makhno—who inspired him—had fought. He was 39 years old. He is survived by his wife and a young son. He turned down offers from European institutions that proposed he live and work safely abroad. He tried to enlist as a volunteer on the front line, but was not accepted on health grounds. Instead, he created a series of paintings and posters depicting fighters from left-wing and anti-authoritarian units, framed by ribbons in the colours of Ukraine, Free Belarus, feminism and anarchism. All proceeds from his works were donated to the army.

Дарю идею для исследования. Взялся бы сам, но уже занят другими проектами в ближайшие месяцы и годы. Закодировать публичные экспертные высказывания о вторжении в Украину до и после того, как оно произошло. Я предполагаю, что мы увидим ряд закономерностей. Самая яркая из них: именно те, кто до 24 февраля полностью отрицал возможность вторжения, утверждая, что оно нерационально и "не нужно Путину", после 24 февраля, наоборот, стали видеть в нем рациональные цели - обнаружилось, что оно все-таки "нужно Путину". Основных лагерей тут два - леваки и реалисты-миршаймерианцы. Сначала полное отрицание самой возможности вторжения (и издевка над теми, кто "повелся на пропаганду ЦРУ"), потом изобретение разных причин и мотивов для вторжения постфактум. Т.е. работа рационализации. Если такой разрыв в оценках действительно существует, нужно понять, почему "рациональные" причины были невидны до 24 февраля, но стали видны потом. Если "марксизьм" все политэкономически предсказывает, то почему не предсказал войну? Аналогичным образом, если реализм все предсказывает исходя из структурных особенностей системы международных отношений, то почему не предсказал войну? Задача такого анализа - не уесть и позлорадствовать, а понять, в чем проблема с этими теориями. И политэкономическое, и реалистическое объяснение в принципе имеют право на существование, я их не отбрасываю. Но где именно эти объяснения сломались? Со своей стороны могу сказать, что я пользовался простой и примитивной "теорей среднего уровня", когда в январе-феврале 2022 года думал о возможности вторжения. Это теория о том, как Путин рассуждает. В интервью немецкому изданию Jungle World, которое я дал в конце января-начале февраля 2022, я сказал, что вторжение возможно. Не "вероятно", но возможно. Я никогда не отрицал, что оно может произойти. Причина в том, что Путин считает блеф слабостью и раз уж он выдвинул войска к украинской границе, он готов дать команду наступать - если сочтет, что его угрозы и шантаж не сработали и он не добился уступок, которые считал приемлемыми. Так и оказалось. С точки зрения пацанской рациональности его поступок рационален. С точки зрения экономической и геополитической рациональности - нет. Значит, как минимум, нужно реконструировать разные типы рациональности, чтобы лучше понимать происходящее в мире. Not only Russia and Israel have illegally annexed territories. Indeed, such direct land grabs are quite rare in the contemporary world, even almost exceptional. But there's another state that practices such things - the Kingdom of Morocco. In 1975, the Moroccan king organized the largest settler colonial invasion in history, called "Green March" to West Sahara, when 350 000 civilians crossed the border with the former Spanish colony to take it over despite the will of the indigenous Sahrawi people. By annexation of West Sahara, Morocco has almost doubled its territory. A small piece of land close to the border with Algeria remained under control of the Polisaro Front, the Sahrawi rebel forces. Two-third of the 500 000 inhabitants of the annexed West Sahara are Moroccan illegal settelers. Most state members of the United Nations don't recognize the legitimacy of Moroccan control over these lands. But there are exceptions - the US and Israel. Not surprised? Eventually, it worth mentioning that people who oppose imperialism are constantly calling for boycotting import from West Sahara - including "bloody phosphates" and agricultural products. By the way, trendy Critsopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" was filmed in the illegally annexed West Sahara, so if you were looking for a decent pretext not to go to the cinema, I found it for you.

⬜️ Five treaties violated by Russia in Ukraine Moscow claims that Kyiv's policies triggered the invasion. Yet Russia had unconditionally recognized Ukraine's territorial integrity in a series of treaties. It violated them all.

Everyone is asking about Ceuta. For now, what I see is a provocation deliberately organized or at least facilitated by the Moroccan royal government. Sixty thousand people do not gather in one place without coordination and without the government's knowledge. There is even footage showing people being transported in an organized manner, packed into the backs of trucks under police supervision. In some ways, this resembles the weaponization of migration by Belarus, which systematically transported migrants from Afghanistan and Iraq to the Polish border in order to create a crisis for a neighboring country. Turkey used similar tactics in the past, leveraging the threat of sending hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees toward Greece and Bulgaria to secure favorable agreements. And what about Morocco? This would not be the first such provocation. Through similar pressure tactics, the Moroccan monarchy has already managed to obtain Spain's effective surrender on the question of Western Sahara, leading to a gradual acceptance of the annexation. Now, as some observers argue, Morocco is weaponizing migration in response to Spain's growing ties with Algeria - its long-standing regional rival and the main supporter of the Western Saharan independence movement. The European Union is seeking to diversify its gas supplies through closer relations with Algeria, a development the Moroccan government clearly dislikes. There is, of course, a theory - [there always is one!] - that this is being coordinated with Israel. Morocco and Israel maintain close strategic relations, while Spain is currently viewed by many in Israel as one of its most hostile governments in Europe. Do I support this theory? No. Such a claim would require strong evidence. Morocco has its own motives, just as the people crossing the border have their own motives [people whom I, as a former undocumented migrant myself, find impossible to condemn]. The most important point, however, is that none of this would be possible without the staggering inequalities that define today's world. As long as the gap between rich and poor remains as vast and catastrophic as it is now, people will continue to storm the gates and fences of the "promised land".

Claims that the Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel off the coast of Russia in the Caspian Sea is supposedly a “Zionist plot” are simply laughable. The Islamic Republic has been complicit in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from the very beginning. Tehran has been supplying weapons to Russia. Among other things, these include long-range Shahed-type drones, which have become one of the main causes of civilian deaths in the rear. Ukraine has its own reasons for striking Iranian ships bound for Russia - it certainly doesn’t need instructions from Israel to do so. Ukraine’s motive is simple: to protect its citizens from Russian attacks. There may be doubts about the military nature of the ship’s cargo and the legitimacy of the target, but not about Ukraine’s agency. If the U.S. and Israel could somehow force Ukraine to join the war against Iran, they would have done so long ago. Ukraine has no interest in a war against Iran; its direct interest lies in a peaceful resolution and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, so that Russia cannot profit from sky-high oil prices. It is in Ukraine’s direct interest that the U.S. not spend astronomical sums on a war against Iran - sums that have already exceeded the total amount of aid Ukraine received from the previous administration. The only thing Ukraine seeks from Iran is that it not supply weapons to fuel Russia’s criminal invasion and not contribute into suffering of its people. Nothing more.

It is delightful that our new framing of the Palestinian question - as an occupation comparable to those in Ukraine and other countries that have been subjected to conquest - has not gone unnoticed amongst the liberal Russian opposition, and in particular its Israeli wing. I am pleased that, according to their own confession, the former consensus, which virtually fully tolerated Israel's actions against Palestine, is cracking at the seams and ceasing to be a consensus (much to the disappointment of the occupation’s supporters). Lesser tolerance to Israeli aggressions and annexations among anti-Putin forces will inevitably result in lesser tolerance to Russia's expansionism among Palestine supporters, and vice versa.
