Sky News found that more than 1,300 Strava users shared workout data from US military bases across the Middle East, revealing routes, routines, troop movements and even activity at bases not shown on public maps. Many users posted under their real names, potentially making individual personnel identifiable. Security experts say Iran could have used this information alongside other intelligence to monitor US forces and identify targets. Sky News highlighted cases in Bahrain and Jordan where changes in Strava activity appeared to reveal where personnel had relocated before locations were later attacked by Iran. The issue is not new: the Pentagon warned in 2018 that fitness-app location data could endanger troops. Despite restrictions, personnel from the US and UK have continued sharing activities from sensitive sites, including RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Sky News also found Strava activity inside Israel’s Dimona nuclear research centre. Source: Sky News
