Luke 19:41-47 At that time, when Jesus drew near to Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it, saying, If you had known, in this your day, even you, the things that are for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a rampart about you, and surround you and shut you in on every side, and will dash you to the ground and your children within you, and will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you have not known the time of your visitation. And He entered the temple, and began to cast out those who were selling and buying in it, saying to them, It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of thieves. And He was teaching daily in the temple.

The spirituality of Saint Bonaventure is best captured in his masterpiece, the Itinerarium Mentis in Deum (The Journey of the Mind into God). He proposes a three-fold way of the spiritual life: The Purgative Way: The soul must be cleansed of sin through penance and the mortification of the senses. The Illuminative Way: The soul contemplates the beauty of God in the order of the universe and in the mysteries of the Incarnation. The Unitive Way: The soul is raised above itself in a mystical union with God, a state of "ecstasy" where the intellect rests and the will is consumed by divine love.

C. XXXV. From the moment a bishop teaches things contrary to the faith, he cannot despoil another. [Pope Nicholas writing to the Emperor Michael (Letter VII)] Pope Celestine says, writing to the Eastern bishops: “If anyone has been excommunicated or stripped of the dignity of bishop or cleric by Bishop Nestorius, or by others who follow him, from the time they began to preach such things, it is manifest that this person has persisted and does persist in our communion; and we do not consider him removed, because the sentence of one who had already shown himself deserving of removal could not remove anyone.” C. XXXVI. Those who are excommunicated by heretics are not to be considered excommunicated. (The same [Pope Nicholas], to the Clergy of Constantinople.) “The authority of our See has openly decreed that no bishop, nor cleric, nor anyone of any Christian profession, who has been cast down from communion or from his position by Nestorius or those like him, from the time they began to preach such things, is to be regarded as having been cast out or excommunicated; but all of these continue to this day in our communion, because one who wavered in preaching such things could not cast down or remove anyone.

Those, however, who in their pride cast the song of the Church out of the house of God, and do not praise Him on earth, shall not be in the company of the angels who praise God in heaven, unless they come to true repentance. - Saint Hildegard of Bingen. The quotation attributed to Saint Hildegard is derived from her correspondence during the crisis of 1178–1179. It is found in her letter to the prelates of Mainz, which serves as a primary source for her defense of the deceased man and her protest against the interdict.

The Secret Visits Even as Pope, he retained the habit of "escaping" the Vatican when he could. On one occasion, he was seen walking in the Vatican Gardens, and a Swiss Guard, not recognizing the figure in the simple white cassock, told him he was not allowed in that particular section. The Pope simply bowed, apologized, and turned back, later remarking to his secretary with a chuckle, "It is good to see that the guards are doing their duty; at least someone in this house is obedient!" These stories remind us that holiness does not require the abandonment of one's humanity. As the Church teaches, grace does not destroy nature, but perfects it. Saint Pius X remained, until his death, a man of the people, whose heart was always anchored in the simplicity of the Gospel, even while he stood as the firm bulwark against the errors of his time. #saint@purification24

Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, who would become the glorious Pope Saint Pius X, was born on June 2, 1835, in Riese, in the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia. Therefore, today marks the 191st anniversary of his birth. As we commemorate the birth of this great Pontiff, it is fitting to reflect upon his life, which serves as a beacon of traditional orthodoxy and pastoral zeal. The Humble Origins of a Shepherd Born into a family of modest means—his father was a village postman—Giuseppe Sarto never lost the simplicity of his roots. It is said that even after he was elevated to the Cardinalate and later the Papacy, he remained profoundly humble. There is a well-known account that when he was Bishop of Mantua, he would often walk the streets of his diocese, stopping to speak with the poor and the laborers, always maintaining the dignity of his office while possessing the heart of a true pastor. The "Pope of the Eucharist" Perhaps the most significant aspect of his pontificate was his tireless effort to restore the centrality of the Holy Eucharist in the lives of the faithful. Before his decree Sacra Tridentina Synodus (1905), the reception of Holy Communion had become infrequent due to the lingering influence of Jansenist rigorism. Saint Pius X insisted that the Eucharist is the "daily bread" of the soul, not a reward for the perfect, but a remedy for the weak . He also lowered the age of First Communion for children famously stating that "as soon as a child can distinguish the Eucharistic Bread from ordinary bread, he should be admitted to the Holy Table" . The Defender of the Faith against Modernism Saint Pius X is perhaps best remembered for his courageous stand against the "synthesis of all heresies": Modernism. In his encyclical Pascendi Dominici. While Saint Pius X was a man of profound gravity and intense prayer, his humility and his origins as a simple village priest often manifested in charming, human, and sometimes humorous ways. He never allowed the immense dignity of the Papacy to stifle his natural warmth or his sense of humour. Here are a few anecdotes that illustrate the character of this great Pontiff: The "Papal" Shoes When Giuseppe Sarto was elected Pope in 1903, he was famously reluctant to accept the office, weeping during the conclave. Once he had accepted, he was fitted for the traditional white cassock and the papal shoes. He looked down at his feet and remarked with a smile to those around him, "See what they have done to me! They have even taken away my comfortable shoes." He often joked about the "prison" of the Vatican, as he deeply missed the ability to walk freely among the people as he had done when he was the Patriarch of Venice. The Cardinal’s Mistake There is a story regarding a visit from a high-ranking prelate who was known for his somewhat pompous demeanor. During an audience, the Cardinal began to speak in a very flowery, overly formal Latin. Saint Pius X, who preferred clarity and simplicity, listened for a moment, then interrupted him with a twinkle in his eye: "Your Eminence, please, let us speak in Italian. My Latin is only that of a village priest, and I fear I am not keeping up with your eloquence." It was a gentle way of reminding the prelate that the Papacy was a service of the soul, not a stage for vanity. The "Infallible" Tailor Saint Pius X was notoriously difficult to dress because he was so thin and had a habit of moving about his study while being measured. One day, while his tailor was trying to fit a new cassock, the Pope kept pacing, reciting his prayers or discussing Church business. The tailor, frustrated, finally exclaimed, "Holy Father, please, you must stand still! I am trying to make you look like a Pope!" Saint Pius X stopped, laughed heartily, and replied, "My dear friend, if you want a Pope who stands still, you should have elected a statue, not a man from Riese!"

She saw in the Heart of God what seemed a beautiful Virgin, who had in her hand a diamond ring with which she constantly touched the Heart of God. The soul asked the Virgin why she so touched the divine Heart and she replied: “I am divine Love, and this diamond represents Adam’s sin, and as blood is used with which to break the diamond, so Adam’s faults can only be obliterated by the Incarnation and blood of Christ. As soon as Adam had sinned, I intervened and prevented the consequences of this fault. I incessantly touched the Heart of God, moving it to pity, and left it no peace until I had taken the Son of God from the bosom of the Father and placed Him in the womb of Mary His Mother”.
