How Napoleon lost a battle against rabbits After the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit in 1807, Napoleon decided to celebrate the occasion with a rabbit hunt and entrusted Berthier with organizing the event. Berthie purchased domestic rabbits—some sources say several hundred, others claim as many as 3,000. But when the rabbits were released, they behaved in an entirely unexpected way. Instead of fleeing, they charged straight at Napoleon and his entourage—driven by hunger and the expectation of being fed. Historian David Chandler described the scene: “Possessing a keener grasp of Napoleon’s strategy than most of his generals, the rabbit horde split into two wings and flanked the emperor’s party, advancing directly on him.” With no other option, Napoleon and his retinue were forced to retreat—hastily climbing into their carriages and making a swift escape. #Наполеон #История #Кролики → #Napoleon #History #Rabbits RawPast

Hemingway was a big cat lover. In 1935, a fellow ship’s captain he knew gave the writer a kitten named Snowball (Snowy). He was a perfectly ordinary cat—except for one quirk: six toes on each paw. Since then, more than seventy years have passed, and cats have lived in Hemingway’s house all along. Today there are 44 of them, most of them six-toed, since they’re all Snowball’s heirs. A special city commission has recognized them as a historic national treasure. These whiskered heroes are treated with great respect. They’re free to roam around the house-museum. There’s a round-the-clock unlimited feeding station just for them. And the Snowball heirs even have their own cemetery. RawPast

The log cabin of Emperor Peter the Great in St. Petersburg King William III of the Netherlands originally gifted Peter the Great’s cottage to Emperor Alexander III. Under Alexander’s orders, supporting beams were installed to reinforce the wooden walls. Later, Emperor Nicholas II commissioned a large protective shell — solid brick walls with a roof — to enclose the cottage, and a monument to Peter I was erected nearby. This is how Peter the Great’s cottage appeared in 1901. RawPast

This bridge in Andalusia took 42 years to build, from 1751 to 1793. Among the workers were those who were born after construction began, grew up, and later came to work on the same project. Others never lived to see its completion. Fifty people lost their lives during its construction. And now, it has stood above the Guadalevín River for over three centuries. Hajimurza Mildzikhov. An Ossetian shepherd. At just 23, he took down 108 fascists in a single battle. From January 14 to 17, 1942, Senior Sergeant Hajimurza Mildzikhov, a Komsomol member and squad commander in the 177th Separate Reconnaissance Company (163rd Rifle Division, 34th Army, Northwestern Front), was part of a sabotage unit operating behind enemy lines in the Lychkovo area—now part of the Demyansk District in Novgorod Oblast. Caught in an ambush, he first held off a large enemy force alongside his comrade Chernov, and later, after Chernov fell, continued fighting alone. Despite being severely wounded in the abdomen and leg, he kept firing from his submachine gun, halting the enemy advance. When reinforcements finally arrived, they counted 108 German soldiers dead in front of his position. RawPast

Drakar The drakar is a deckless sailing and rowing vessel, approximately 25–27 meters long and 5–7 meters wide. It stands as one of humanity’s most refined achievements in naval warfare—a ship built for pursuit and attack. With exceptional seafaring capabilities, the drakar was designed to master diverse conditions, navigating both open oceans and narrow river currents. It was aboard these vessels that the Vikings reached Iceland, Greenland, and even America, which they called Vinland. Unlike in other cultures, where rowing was a slave’s duty, among the Vikings it was a position of honor. A slave permitted to take up an oar earned freedom and became a full member of the crew. Peter III’s Pastimes Peter III wasn’t exactly a man of deep intellect, and his hobbies reflected that. Even as an adult, the emperor adored playing with toy soldiers. He spent days—sometimes entire nights—staging mock battles in a special room completely filled with miniature troops, reenacting bloody military campaigns. Once, after arranging his toy army and stepping away briefly, he returned to find three starch-made soldiers maimed—gnawed by a rat. The "commander" in him instantly flared up. He demanded the rodent be captured—and hanged as punishment. Over time, Peter III added another passion to his list: drinking. RawPast
