WFP already supports 800,000 refugees in Ethiopia, including 100,000 Sudanese refugees, while escalating insecurity in northeastern South Sudan could drive 10,000 more refugees across the border. - Poor rainfall expected in south-eastern Ethiopia through May risks another drought in the Somali region as families are still reeling from the 2020-2023 drought – the country’s longest on record.

The year 2024 was marked by extreme temperature events in Asia that caused thousands of deaths, severe droughts in Africa affecting over 25 million people, and devastating tropical storms in the United States of America, with cumulative damage exceeding US$100 billion.

  • Myanmar: Heavy rains heighten risk of disease outbreaks following earthquake Save the Children and its partners are seeing the needs of children firsthand in communities with limited access to clean water in the aftermath of the devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake on 28 March. In some areas, access to safe water has been severely disrupted with some primary water sources now contaminated and people forced to rely on spring or surface water. In the hardest hit areas, damaged pipelines have also cut access to spring water and rivers are far away. The lack of electricity in some areas has made it impossible to pump water.

  • Myanmar - Earthquakes (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 March 2025) - A strong earthquake of 7.7 M at a depth of 10 km occurred on 28 March at 06.20 UTC (12.50 local time) in Sagaing Region, central Myanmar. The epicentre was located about 16 km north-north-west of Sagaing city, and 19 km north-west of Mandalay city. An aftershock of 6.4 M at a depth of 10 km occurred in the same area at 06.32 UTC. Sagaing is home to 1.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) – a third of all IDPs in Myanmar. - USGS PAGER estimates that up to 7,000 people were exposed to violent shaking, up to 2,866,000 people to severe shaking, and up to 10,190,000 exposed to strong and very strong shaking. - According to media reports, several buildings collapsed in Mandalay city, and buckling roads have been observed in Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar. The earthquake was felt in Bangkok and Chiang Mai cities in Thailand, where people have been evacuated from buildings, and in Yunnan and Shaanxi provinces in China. Aftershocks are continuing to be felt across the country. - Myanmar has the fifth highest number of people in need of humanitarian assistance globally – 20 million, or about a third of the country.

  • A third of Myanmar’s population faces food insecurity, UN human rights experts warn Since the military coup in February 2021, the intensification of conflict across the country has led to an estimated 15.2 million people facing acute food insecurity.

  • Violence in South Sudan causes new influx in Ethiopia’s Gambella region The situation in South Sudan's northern counties of Nasir and Ulang rapidly escalated, causing significant displacement and humanitarian concerns. Since mid-February 2025, the violence has led to the displacement of tens of thousands within South Sudan, with 50,000 people newly displaced within Nasir and 34,000 in Ulang. According to the local authority in Gambella, many have fled to neighbouring Ethiopia. By March 10, over 10,000 people had crossed into Gambella Region, a sharp increase from 6,900 just a few days earlier on March 6. These new arrivals, predominantly from South Sudan's Upper Nile State, are crossing through the Burbiey border of Gambella Region. The numbers are increasing at an alarming rate, and local authorities are tracking and assisting the displaced individuals, as they are dispersed across various communities, especially in Burbiey and Matar area.
