Assembly-Based Movements to Overcome Fascism Sunday 19th | 7pm BST | Online REGISTER shorturl.at/XX0bG What do Mamdani’s election in New York, the victory of the eco-socialist party in Copenhagen this year, and a network of Black-led community cooperatives helping to elect their own mayor in Jackson, Mississippi, in the United States, have in common? All of these examples are rooted in bottom-up community mobilisation: people coming together, organising locally, and making collective decisions through assemblies and direct democracy. In this meeting, we will discuss how to build neighbourhood-based mobilisation. We believe that the next necessary step for the climate movement is to move quickly beyond activist bubbles and focus, with humility, on working-class neighbourhoods and bottom-up organising. Within two years, Reform could be in government, and London's boroughs will be among the first places to feel the effects. We have already watched what happens in the US when far-right power confronts migrant communities that were not ready for it. On Saturday 11 July, Shake It Up is bringing organisers and neighbours together at Saint Pancras Church House to start building that readiness here. The day runs from 10:30am to 4:30pm and is free to attend. The morning talks cover the basic principles of how people are empowered and how minds actually change, with Professor Sharath Srinivasan and Dr Antoine Sander from Cambridge University, Extinction Rebellion co-founder Roger Hallam, and Sarah Stein Lubrano, author of Don't Talk About Politics. In the afternoon, workshops look at what is already working in projects across the city, with plenty of time after to network and connect across groups. With Green Party council wins opening new possibilities, there is a real chance to link work inside councils with work in communities and build resilience in the places facing the sharpest impact.
