After his wife of 24 years died, Alexander Ee embarked on the Camino de Santiago, a 925km pilgrimage across Europe, to "run away from home" and rediscover his life's purpose. What he experienced was so transformative that it resulted in a book, A Glimpse of Heaven: Grief, Self and Community on the Camino, which was a finalist at the 2026 Singapore Book Awards in the Best Non-Fiction Title category. Since that first pilgrimage, Alex has walked the Camino three more times. This September, he will return – this time walking 827km along the northern Spain route for charity. In the newly-released 2026 State of the Church Annual Survey, churches reported more salvations and baptisms in 2025 compared to the COVID-19 pandemic years. This runs counter to the statistics from the General Household Survey 2025 that showed a declining Christian population over the same timeframe. This was one of the metrics highlighted during the presentation at Fairfield Methodist Church today, where the findings of the survey were presented. Besides evangelism, other areas that were discussed include whether the Church is doing enough for missions as well as caring for church workers, with the issue of staffing and salaries receiving attention in the report. Once a month, scores of seniors gather at eight coffeeshops across Singapore to play games, exercise, share a meal and connect with one another. This is the Kopitiam Initiative, which brings active ageing right to where the elderly already hang out. "We wanted seniors to learn new skills, make new friends and get to know their neighbours. And of course, there had to be food and drinks. We wanted it to feel like a party." 40.DAY 2026 • DAY 38 “The persecution was so strong in the first-century Church, that every single one of the 12 Apostles was martyred for their faith – with the exception of John, but he was boiled in a pot of oil, so that really wasn’t any better. “They were in it for what they could give, but I wonder… if in our first-world Church, we are in it more for what we can get.” — Jemima Ooi Look out for our daily video and devotional from July 1 to August 9. 🖥️ Watch: https://youtu.be/Td9fhMuQurY 📖 Read: https://saltandlight.sg/40-day/day-38-together-we-go-to-the-nations/
