4 авг.In the fish challenge I posted earlier, the most natural verb was FLOP If you see a fish out of the water, moving around because it can’t breathe, flop ✅ is the verb most Americans would use The fish is flopping around Some of you also suggested these: Flounder can describe a fish struggling like this, but these days you’ll hear it much more often figuratively, especially about people: The company is floundering / He was floundering in the interview / a floundering career Wriggle does focus on twisting & squirming movements, but it isn’t the go-to verb for a fish stranded on the ground It’s often used for worms, babies, young kids or smth trying to wriggle free from smn’s grip Wiggle usually suggests small, controlled or playful movement Kids wiggle in their seats. Dogs wiggle with excitement, etc Thrash emphasizes wild, violent movements. It describes how intensely it’s moving, not the typical action itself8,12%
24 июл.In my private classes, I like to use short films with no dialogue or narration to put the vocab we covered into context, notice the little details & practice everyday & descriptive English One of my favorites is Pip 🐶 Here’s how we usually work with short films in class: 1️⃣ Watch the original short film (the first video in this post) As my students watch, I encourage them to notice what’s happening & see how many of the phrases we’ve covered naturally come to mind 2️⃣ Watch it again This time, we narrate the story as it unfolds, pausing whenever we need a moment to think or find the right words 3️⃣ Then we compare it with my suggested script The phrases in bold are gapped out first, so students actively recall the language before checking the suggested answers 4️⃣ After that I reveal the suggested version (the second video in this post) I like to practice what I preach, so after we’ve worked through the film together, I usually give my own spontaneous narration of the film This time, I recorded🎤& shared it with you 5️⃣ Finally, my students can shadow & / or voice over the narration Repeating it a couple of times while reading along is a simple but powerful way to help the vocabulary stick 🙌🏻8,05%
