Transformative Justice Collective (TJC)

Singapore executed a 79-year-old stateless person today—the 16th execution of 2026.

At the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty, Elijah Tay, a member of the Transformative Justice Collective and Student Actions for Transformative jUstice (SATU) spoke on the panel, "The war on drugs and the death penalty: a stumbling block." During which, they shared about the challenges we face in Singapore, as well as the strategies we adopt on the ground. In particular, they drew attention to the government's witch hunt of drug trade workers and the context of increasing authoritarianism here over the past decades. The 15th execution of 2026 was carried out this morning.

The 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Paris has gone by in a flash. At the closing ceremony, TJC was one of two organisations presented with the Documentation Award. (The other was Iran Human Rights, who do amazing and amazingly brave work tracking executions in Iran.) I’m so proud and grateful that TJC’s work has been recognised by allies and comrades in our shared struggle for the abolition of the death penalty. I’m so proud of TJC as a collective for what we have done over the years, and what we continue to do together. It hasn’t been easy in so many ways, but we’ve been able to achieve more together than any of us could have done alone. And we won a documentation award at a time when the government’s POFMA orders essentially left us with no choice but to give up our website and multiple social media platforms until the end of this year! ✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼

I missed a day because of a cancelled flight but I have made it to the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty in Paris 🇫🇷! Join us for the launch of TJC’s newest handbook, No Comment: Your Rights To Resist The Police, a practical resource for navigating police investigations, raids, and stop-and-search encounters. The handbook offers guidance on organizing support, accessing legal aid, crowdfunding fines, and standing your ground against police overreach. During the event, we’ll host an interactive role-play re-enacting real police interactions, followed by a panel discussion with activists from different generations sharing their experiences and strategies. Syed Suhail was executed by the PAP government in Jan 2025. On death row, he fought for the rights of fellow prisoners. The tiles around his grave have been wobbly.
