The tool even accounts for the many different forms your target language may take (e.g. sentences starting with your word or its present perfect form). This website is such a life saver! 💡 Kialo.com – this is where you can get your hands on ready-made arguments on all kinds of topics. You can use them in your task 2 essay. You choose a particular topic card, read background information about it, and then read debate points users left. I'd start here. 📊 Statista.com – the language here goes beyond what Task 1 textbooks offer. Though you should be quite selective, or else, you might pick up overly informal language or something completely irrelevant. And don't get lost – all the cool stuff is: statista.com/chartoftheday 📺 How it's made – this one is a YouTube channel, where you can watch videos that offer a great deal of "process" language as well as specific words you may be clueless about in diagram tasks. Countries should try to produce all the food that their population eats and import as little food as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree? With the rise of globalization, more and more countries are shifting away from local production and turning to importing. The food industry is no exception. However, there is a pocket of resistance pressuring countries to focus their efforts on producing their food domestically as much as possible. In my opinion, such an approach is not always viable. There are concerns about the practice of importing more food than producing locally, and they are not without basis. It is no secret that when plants, fruit, and other foodstuffs are flown in by airplanes, the most common way of importation, the environment stands to suffer the consequences. In fact, the aviation industry is one of the leading contributors to global warming with its especially high levels of greenhouse emissions. While it is true that passenger flights dominate airlines and it may seem pointless to cap food shipment, doing so could at least ease our burden on the environment. Granted, limiting food imports may sound great in theory, but in practice, it proves inefficient. There are numerous countries, especially in the developed world, whose infrastructure does not support local farming, hence warranting help from other countries. For example, environmentalists and food experts conducted an experiment comparing the environmental costs of importing sugar cane from South Africa and growing it locally in the UK. They concluded that the former had a lower carbon footprint, which makes sense because the UK lacked the necessary conditions for cultivating this staple plant. For the same reason, locally grown fruit and vegetables can be too expensive for the average population, and such is the case for most European countries, too. In conclusion, food importation has become a fact of life for most countries. Although critics remain skeptical about this practice, pointing to the environmental costs associated with it, a closer scrutiny paints a different picture – that imports are, in fact, necessary, especially for countries that cannot support local food production. EXAM STORY [Part 2] ❤️ In the winter of 2025, I finally scored band 9.0 – almost a year after my first brush with it. I had been retaking the test – probably a total of 5 times – with a few close encounters again (usually the combo of 9.0, 9.0, 8.0, 8.5). The arrival of this overdue score was – for lack of a better word – interesting. When I first opened my email to check the result, it was an overall 8.5 again (9.0, 8.5, 8.0, 9.0). However, I was quite relieved because this combination of sub-scores offered an easy way forward – either retake reading or appeal writing. Guess what? Just to be safe, I went ahead and did both. 😁 Luckily enough, my EOR on writing came back positive – they bumped up the score to an 8.5, thus helping me secure my second perfect 9.0 for Task 2. I went ahead with the reading retake and thankfully didn’t let my friend Dawoudkhon’s money go to waste. You see, on my birthday, he had promised to finance me in some way if I’m ever closing to scoring a 9.0. May Allah bless him for his amazing gift. In terms of how the exam went, again, it was nothing special. My Task 2 prompt read like this: Some people believe that it is more important to plant trees in towns and cities than to build more housing. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Contrary to popular belief, I wrote a short essay of around 250 words. I presented one main idea in each body paragraph, making sure I develop my argument in depth – a key ingredient for band 9.0 in Task Response. I barely had enough time to edit my work, and I remember at one point writing something as stupid as “More importantly, even more important is…”. This taught me an important lesson: your writing doesn’t have to be perfect; as long as you don’t make grammatical mistakes, you are fine. For Task 1, I honestly can’t remember how exactly I approached it. The task was a typical bar chart about household expenditure. But I remember spending a lot of time on it, as I always do in all my exams. For whatever reason, I take my sweet time in Task 1. It is more difficult to score 9.0 here – with so many subtleties to keep in mind – so I ponder the best move to get it just right. @ulugbekwrites

EXAM STORY, WRITING 9.0 At the outset of 2024, I came dangerously close to an overall Band 9.0, with 9.0s in Listening and Reading, an 8.5 in Writing, and an 8.0 in Speaking. Funnily enough, I had scored 9.0 in Speaking just before this sitting – you can't have it all. 😒 But the highlight of this exam was my first 8.5 in Writing. It was such a flex at the age of 18. I didn't see it coming, to be honest, especially right after scoring a 7.5 in my previous exam. Besides, I hadn't finished my Task 1 summary – I skipped the introduction for the sake of time management. Despite this, I scored 8.0 in Task 1 and 9.0 in Task 2. I can't help but wonder whether I would have had a perfect 9.0 in Writing overall had I finished Task 1. 🤭 🗺I had a map task, which was pretty niche – a particular site before and after archaeological findings. I think it was my understanding of the task that helped me score 8.0. Most candidates would probably misinterpret that particular task and end up scoring low for Task Achievement, writing something like "X was replaced by Y", when nothing is really replaced in the task; it is discovered. I can't quite remember the exact wording of my Task 2 prompt, but it was something along these lines: Newspapers have a significant influence on people's ideas and opinions. Why is this? Is this a negative or a positive development? I didn't do anything special here. I think it was the fact that the task was, once again, quite niche. Most candidates can't fully develop this topic due to the lack of ideas, supporting points, and language. But this is where I thrive – I take specific ideas, use precise language, and connect them to the theme. Phrases like "carpet bombing", "collateral damage" and "reduced to rubble" dominated my prose, while vivid examples – such as "a 70-year-old American stabbed his 6-year-old Palestinian neighbour to death in the aftermath of news about Muslim terrorists" – shed light on my argument about newspapers and tied it all together, allowing me to score a 9.0 for Task Response. All in all, years of exposure to a variety of topics in English proved especially useful in this exam.
