Coral Triangle – A 5.7 million sq. km marine area covering Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste. Known as the “Amazon of the seas” for its extraordinary marine biodiversity. 2. Coral Larvae – Free-swimming “seeds” of corals that develop into coral polyps and form coral colonies. Crucial for reef regeneration and recovery after bleaching. 3. Cryobank / Cryopreservation – The process of freezing and preserving biological material (like coral larvae) at extremely low temperatures (around -196°C using liquid nitrogen) for long-term storage and future revival. 4. Genetic Insurance Policy – The concept of storing genetic material to safeguard against extinction — ensuring species can be revived if lost in nature. 5. Symbiodiniaceae – A family of photosynthetic microalgae that live inside coral tissues and provide energy to corals through photosynthesis. Their loss leads to coral bleaching. 6. Cryoprogramme – A conservation initiative that cryopreserves coral larvae and their symbiotic algae as an “insurance policy” for reef restoration. 7. Coral Bleaching – The whitening of corals due to the expulsion of Symbiodiniaceae algae caused by heat stress, ocean acidification, or pollution. 8. Cryogenics – The branch of science dealing with very low temperatures and their effects on materials. Used here for preserving coral larvae using liquid nitrogen. 9. Model Species (e.g., Pocillopora, Acropora, Goniastrea) - Coral species used as models in scientific experiments to test new cryopreservation techniques before applying them to more vulnerable species. 10. Cryogenic Freezing using Liquid Nitrogen – A method of ultra-low temperature freezing at -196°C, allowing coral larvae to be frozen instantly and preserved without damage. 11. Biodiversity Bank / Seed Bank Analogy – The idea of a “living seed bank” for coral larvae to preserve marine genetic diversity — similar to how agricultural seed banks store crop varieties for future use.0,49%
