Today we begin our journey to Calvary. On Easter, we may sing with joy, "O death, where is thy sting?" Today, we recall with trembling the terrible lamentation of Our God Incarnate looking upon the city He had chosen. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldest not." Remember, O man, that thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return. Let us keep before us this Quatrogesima that this may be our last chance to hearken to His voice and seek the protection He offers to His children gathered together. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, be merciful to me, a sinner.

Prayer To St Joseph For The Agonizing O St. Joseph, protector of those in agony, take pity on those who at this very moment when I pray to thee are engaged in their last combat. O blessed Joseph, take pity on my soul too when the hour of the final battle shall arrive for me. Then, O my holy patron, do not abandon me, but grant me thine assistance; show that thou art my good father, and obtain that my Divine Savior may receive me with mercy into that abode where the elect enjoy a life that shall never end. Amen. St Joseph, advocate of the dying and the sinner, pray for us who have recourse to thee 🙏🏼

God bestows specific aids called “actual grace” to each succeeding moment. Each grace is measured to help us be like Jesus in the present moment. We do not possess the grace to endure the pains of cancer at a time when we only need grace to endure a headache. We must understand that God does not distribute His specific graces before they are needed. Our Baptism and the following of His commandments keeps us in a state of grace, but every moment of our lives God bestows those special actual graces that are to help us be like Jesus. Yesterday, 12 February, was the Feast of the Seven Holy Founders of the Servite Order, dedicated in a special way to Our Lady of Sorrows and holders of the oldest unchanged Rosary in the Church, the Chaplet of the Seven Sorrows. These singularly devoted men of Florence were gifted a vision of Our Lady, each separately but identical and unbeknownst to the others, that led them out of the world "the better to serve Almighty God". With Septuagesima just around the corner, here is an ideal devotion for reflection on the meaning of sacrifice, for no one understood and understands penance for others like Our Lady, whose Immaculate and Sorrowful Heart joined itself inextricably to her Son's own suffering and sacrifice. May Our Sorrowful Mother by her Rosary and her Scapular, draw us all ever closer to worthiness of the promises of Christ!

Reflection. "You will catch more flies," Saint Francis used to say, "with a spoonful of honey than with a hundred barrels of vinegar. If there were anything better or more beautiful on earth than gentleness, Jesus Christ would have taught it to us; and yet He has given us only two lessons to learn of Him - meekness and humility of heart."

The Bishop is in extremis. Please pray hard for him.

The Bishop continues to deteriorate slowly. One of the faithful with him, a Catholic nurse, has said that in all her time in such circumstances she has never seen anyone so peaceful and is convinced that this is down to all the prayers being offered up by so many all over the world, so please keep them up.

Reflection. Her innocence endeared Saint Agnes to Christ, as it has endeared her to His Church ever since. Even as penitents we may imitate her innocence in our own sphere. Let us strictly guard our eyes, and Christ, when He sees that we desire to keep our hearts pure for love of Him, will fortify our resolution and bless it.

January 6.--THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD. THE word Epiphany means “manifestation,” and it has passed into general acceptance throughout the universal Church, from the fact that Jesus Christ manifested to the eyes of men His divine mission on this day first of all, when a miraculous star revealed His birth to the kings of the East, who, in spite of the difficulties and dangers of a long and tedious journey through deserts and mountains almost impassable, hastened at once to Bethlehem to adore Him and to offer Him mystical presents, as to the King of kings, to the God of heaven and earth, and to a Man withal feeble and mortal. The second manifestation was when, going out from the waters of the Jordan after having received Baptism from the hands of St. John, the Holy Ghost descended on Him in the visible form of a dove, and a voice from heaven was heard, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased.” The third manifestation was that of His divine power, when at the marriage-feast of Cana He changed the water into wine, at the sight whereof His disciples believed in Him. The remembrance of these three great events, concurring to the same end, the Church has wished to celebrate in one and the same festival. Reflection.--Admire the almighty power of this little Child, Who from His cradle makes known His coming to the shepherds and magi--to the shepherds by means of His angel, to the magi by a star in the East. Admire the docility of these kings. Jesus is born; behold them at His feet. Let us be little, let us hide ourselves, and the divine strength will be granted to us. Let us be docile and quick in following divine inspirations, and we shall then become wise of the wisdom of God, powerful in His almighty power.
