If you have not already, now is the one of the best times to keep you 6 Shawwal fasts as we approach the white days of this month. Abu Ayyub (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted for the entire year.” [Sahih Muslim 1164] Why does fasting 6 days of Shawwal equal a whole year? Thawban reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Fasting the month of Ramadan is like ten months of fasting and fasting six days of Shawwal is like two months of fasting. Thus, they are like fasting for a year.” [Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2115 Grade: Sahih by Al Albani] From this hadith (and many others) scholars have mentioned that 1 good deed is rewarded with 10 like it (at the minimum). So 1 fast = 10 30 (or 29) days fasting = 300 (or 290) 6 days of shawwal = 60 This equals 360 (or 350) which is pretty much 1 whole Islamic year Fast the 6 days if you can.
On the final day of Ramadan, a moment of sorrow but always gratitude for Allah’s blessing in experiencing this month. Many who were with us last year are no longer here and many won’t make it to the next. May Allah allow us to experience the next Ramadan. As I mentioned, always give thanks to Allah for this blessing. It was narrated from Talhah bin ‘Ubaidullah that two men from Bali came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). They had become Muslim together, but one of them used to strive harder than the other. The one who used to strive harder went out to fight and was martyred. The other one stayed for a year longer, then he passed away. Talhah said: “I saw in a dream that I was at the gate of Paradise and I saw them (those two men). Someone came out of Paradise and admitted the one who had died last, then he came out and admitted the one who had been martyred. Then he came back to me and said: ‘Go back, for your time has not yet come.’” The next morning, Talhah told the people of that and they were amazed. News of that reached the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and they told him the story. He said: “Why are you so amazed at that?” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, the first one was the one who strove harder, then he was martyred, but the other one was admitted to Paradise before him. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Did he not stay behind for a year?” They said: “Yes.” He said: “And did not Ramadan come and he fasted, and he offered such and such prayers during that year?” They said: “Yes.” The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The difference between them is greater than the difference between heaven and earth.”
We have reached the last odd night of Ramadan and possibly the last night. As we prepare to bid farewell to this blessed month, review what you have achieved so far and intend to take these good habits into Shawwal and so on, even if it is a little. Narrated by `Aisha: The Prophet (ﷺ) was asked, "What deeds are loved most by Allah?" He said, "The most regular constant deeds even though they may be few." He added, 'Don't take upon yourselves, except the deeds which are within your ability." [Bukhari 6465] عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ أَنَّهَا قَالَتْ سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَىُّ الأَعْمَالِ أَحَبُّ إِلَى اللَّهِ قَالَ " أَدْوَمُهَا وَإِنْ قَلَّ ". وَقَالَ " اكْلَفُوا مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ
Ibn al Jawzi رحمه الله said: By Allah, if it was said to the inhabitants of the grave to make a wish, they would wish for one day of Ramadan. We’ve reached and are coming to the end of the final Jumu’ah of Ramadan, with only a few more days left. Let’s seize this opportunity to intensify our worship and avoid complacency. If you’ve fallen short, take some time to reflect on your shortcomings and make amends. I have some wonderful tidings for you: Ramadan isn’t over yet! This month has been a month of forgiveness and mercy, a month when the gates of Jannah are open and the gates of Hell are closed, and the Shayateen are locked away. Soon, this blessed month will come to an end and our hearts will long for it again but we are not guaranteed that we will see the next one. Take some time to sit and ponder: have we as individuals done enough this month? The farewell will be both great and difficult, just as our hearts have come to peace. It will depart as it came. Make sure that the habits you’ve gained stick beyond Ramadan. Make the most of the time you have left of this blessed month so that you have no regrets. I give Shukr to Allah for allowing us the great bounty of experiencing this Ramadan and allowing us to look for Laylatul Qadr. I ask Allah that he accepts all our worship and our striving in this month, may He accept all our duas before next Ramadan. I ask Allah that he allows us to reach the next Ramadan so we can once again give our all in striving towards His pleasure. May He give us the opportunity to search for Laylatul Qadr again and keep knocking on the door with plenty of dua. I ask Allah that he makes the good habits stick throughout the year. I ask Allah that he protects the oppressed and the weak and the He cures the sick. I ask Allah to protect our brothers and sisters in Palestine and grant them victory over the oppressors, I ask him to protect Masjid Al-Aqsa.
Take advantage of the remaining days of Ramadan and slowly increase our worship so we get accustomed to it when the Last 10 days arrive. Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله) said: “Truly, your month has taken to decreasing, so you should increase in action.”
Protect your fasts! The Tabi’ Yahya Bin Abi Kathir said: The man abstains from the good lawful things (food and drink) and he breaks it with the bad and unlawful things: the flesh of his brother (backbiting). Abu al-Aaliyah said: The one who fasts is in a constant state of worship, as long as he doesn’t engage in backbiting, even if he is sleeping on his bed. This goes for any other sin, stay away from them as much as you can and do not diminish the rewards of fasting.
The month of Ramadan is the month of forgiveness. The Prophet ﷺ said: “May a man upon whom Ramadan enters and then passes, before he is forgiven, be humiliated.” [Tirmidhi 3545] The month of Ramadan is the month of forgiveness. So turn to your Lord and repent, indeed He is the most forgiving and most merciful. The word Ramadan is derived from رمض which means intense burning, in the same way a belivers minor sins can be burned by righteous deeds especially in Ramadan. There are so many easy ways to get His forgiveness granted to us. The Prophet ﷺ said: The five daily prayers, Jumuʿah to Jumuʿah, and Ramadan to Ramadan are an expiation for what is between them, so long as one stays away from the major sins. [Muslim 233] The Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever stands (in voluntary prayer of) Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven. And whoever spends the night of Laylat Al-Qadr in prayer out of faith and in the hope of reward, his previous sins will be forgiven." [Nasai 5027] The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ." [Bukhari 2014] Merely fasting with sincerity is forgiveness, if we are not going to be granted forgiveness this month then when are we going to be forgiven? The month of Ramadan is the month of forgiveness.
Ramadan arrives at the perfect moment, a time when our faith requires a refreshing boost and good habits begin to wane. It serves as a catalyst for rekindling those habits and revitalising our faith. This truly blessed month, a gift from Allah which offers countless virtues. Don’t squander this precious time or be careless. Strive as had as you can. The Prophet ﷺ mentions as part of a longer hadith: وَرَغِمَ أَنْفُ رَجُلٍ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ رَمَضَانُ ثُمَّ انْسَلَخَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُغْفَرَ لَهُ May a man, who Ramadan enters upon and then passes before he is forgiven, be humiliated (Tirmidhi 3545) Ramadan Kareem!
On the Day of Arafah, one way we can expand in good deeds is by charity. A friend of mine is raising money for charity by attempting 100,000 steps! During the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah, it’s the perfect time to amplify your good deeds—so please consider donating or sharing to support the cause. https://www.gofundme.com/f/ahmeds-100000-steps-in-a-single-day-for-charity?lang=en_GB
Virtues of the Day of Arafah: ⁃ 2 years worth of (minor) sins are expiated Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about fasting on the day of ‘Arafah and he said: He was asked about fasting on the day of 'Arafa (9th of Dhu'I-Hijja), whereupon he said: It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year. [Sahih Muslim 1162b] ⁃ Day of forgiveness from sins and freedom from the fire. A’isha (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There is no day upon which Allah frees more of His servants from the Hellfire than the day of Arafat. He draws near and then he boasts of them to the angels, saying: What do these servants want?” [Sahih Muslim 1348]. As for you staying till the evening in Arafah, then Allah descends to the sky of the Dunya and He boasts about you to the Angels, and says: ‘My slaves have come to Me, looking rough, from every deep valley hoping for My mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth My slaves! Having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.” [Tabrani, Al-Albani graded it Hasan, Taken from ‘Saheeh al-Targheeb wa Tarheeb’. Volume 2,Page 9-10, hadeeth no. 1112]. Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah Almighty boasts to His angels of the pilgrims on the afternoon of the day of Arafat, saying: Look at My servants, coming to Me disheveled and dusty.” [Musnad Ahmad 7089, classed as Sahih by Al-Albani] ⁃ Best Dua is to say it on this day ‘Amr ibn Shu’ayb reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best supplication is that which is made on the day of Arafat. The best of it is what was said by myself and the prophets before me: There is no God but Allah alone, without any partners, unto Him belong the dominion and all praise and He has power over all things.” [Tirmidhi 3585, graded as Hasan by Al-Albani] The arabic for the dua: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُو عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ Transliteration: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay in qadeer Talhah ibn ‘Ubayd ibn Kurayz narrated in a mursal report: “The best of du’a is du’a on the day of ‘Arafah.” [Narrated by Malik in al-Muwatta’ (500); classed as hasan by al-Albani in Sahih al-Jami’ (1102)] ⁃ Allah perfected the religion on this day. Imam Ahmad recorded that Tariq bin Shihab said, "A Jewish man said to `Umar bin Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.' `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, `Which is that verse' The Jew replied (This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you...) `Umar replied, `By Allah! I know when and where this verse was revealed to Allah's Messenger . It was the evening on the Day of `Arafah on a Friday."' Al-Bukhari recorded this Hadith through Al-Hasan bin As-Sabbah from Ja`far bin `Awn. Muslim, At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasa'i also recorded this Hadith.
As we approach the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah, I just wanted to remind everyone how virtuous these 10 days are as a lot of people do not know or forget. In these 10 days, strive as hard as you would for the last 10 nights in Ramadan. It was asked: The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah and the last 10 days of Ramadan, which of them are more virtuous. Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah replied: The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are more virtuous than the last 10 days of Ramadan and the last 10 nights of Ramadan are more virtuous than the first 10 nights of Dhul Hijjah. [Majmoo al-Fataawa vol 25 p.287] What can we do to strive hard in these 10 days? A lot of dhikr It is Sunnah to say Takbir ("Allahu akbar"), Tahmid ("Al-hamdu Lillah"), Tahlil ("La ilaha ill-Allah") and Tasbih ("Subhan Allah") during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah A lot of repentance Read as much Quran as you can A lot of dua Give sadaqah Fast (permissible to fast the first 9 days, 10th day is Eid so you CANNOT fast on that day) Pray more nafl salah Doing more good deeds in general as they are beloved to Allah and they will bring about reward
Remember to fast 6 days of Shawwal to maximise your rewards! Abu Ayyub (رضي الله عنه) reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted for the entire year.” [Sahih Muslim 1164] If you have any missed fasts, remember to make them up before fasting the 6 days of Shawwal. After Eid, you may fast these days consecutively or spread it out over the month of Shawwal, whichever is easier for you. Why does fasting 6 days of Shawwal equal a whole year?
Eid to do list: 1- Recite Takbir from Maghrib on last day of Ramadan until Eid. Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar (Allahu Akbar), laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar (Allahu Akbar), wa Lillaahi’l-hamd You can say Allahu Akbar 2 or 3 times, both are permitted. 2- To do ghusl, some of the salaf used to do this. 3- Use Miswaak 4- Adorn yourself in your best clothes whilst ensuring modesty 5- Apply perfume (men only) 6- Head out to the place of Eid prayer early and eat an odd number of dates before you do. 7- Give Sadaqah al Fitr (Zakat al Fitr) before the Eid prayer. 8- Walk to the place of Eid prayer and return from it with a different route 9- Listen to the Khutbah after the prayer 10- Greet each other and congratulate each other: تقبل منا ومنكم Taqabbal Minna wa Minkum “May Allah accept from us and from you.”
Ibn al Jawzi رحمه الله said: By Allah, if it was said to the inhabitants of the grave to make a wish, they would wish for one day of Ramadan. We’ve reached the final Jumu’ah of Ramadan and the final odd night. Only 1 or 2 days remain. Take some time to sit and ponder: have we as individuals done enough this month? The farewell will be difficult, just as our hearts have come to peace. It will depart as it came. Make the most of the time you have left of this blessed month.
The primary source of Tafsir of the Quran is the Quran itself, take the verses of the revelation of the Quran for example, each verse little bit more detail on when the Quran was revealed: شَهۡرُ رَمَضَانَ ٱلَّذِیۤ أُنزِلَ فِیهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ هُدࣰى لِّلنَّاسِ وَبَیِّنَـٰتࣲ مِّنَ ٱلۡهُدَىٰ وَٱلۡفُرۡقَانِۚ The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. Al-Baqarah, Ayah 185 إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ فِی لَیۡلَةࣲ مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِینَ﴿ ٣ ﴾ Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind]. Ad-Dukhān, Ayah 3 إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ فِی لَیۡلَةِ ٱلۡقَدۡرِ﴿ ١ ﴾ بِّسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِیمِ إِنَّاۤ أَنزَلۡنَـٰهُ فِی لَیۡلَةِ ٱلۡقَدۡرِ﴿ ١ ﴾ Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. Al-Qadr, Ayah 1 Then comes the ahadith. Narrated Mu'awiyah b. Abi Sufyan : The Prophet (ﷺ) as saying: Lailat al-qadr is the twenty-seventh night (of Ramadan) [Abu Dawood 1386 || Classed as Sahih by Al-Albani] We are in the 27th night right now, lets make our extra efforts count in what could be the night of decree, a night which is better than 1000 months!
Tafsir Ibn Kathir, in the explanation of Surah al-Qadr, gives an explanation on why Laylatul Qadr is better than 1000 months and why this verse was revealed. The reports slightly differ but the main theme from them are very similar. A person (or some people) from Banu Israeel worshipped Allah for 80 years (or 1000 months in one report) and did not disobey him in the slightest. They used to stand for Qiyam at night and fight in the path of Allah in the morning and they did that for 80 years (or 1000 months in one report). The Muslims, Sahabah and the Prophet ﷺ were amazed at this so Jibreel (عليه السلام) revealed this verse upon our Prophet ﷺ and said “This is better than what you were amazed at.” 1000 months = 83 years and Laylatul Qadr is better than that. Let us strive hard as we can im the last few days to get 83 (or more) years of good deeds written for us.
Do not get complacent in the last 10 nights!
From Maghrib tonight it will be the 21st night of Ramadan and also the night of Jumuah. Ibn Rajab (رحمه الله) said: “If the night before Friday coincides with one of the odd-numbered nights during the last ten, then it is more likely than others to be Laylatul Qadr. They are all signs so do not let this necessitate cutting off Laylatul Qadr.” [Lataa’if al-Ma‘aarif] Meaning, this is just a sign and it doesn’t necessarily mean it is Laylatul Qadr as Allah knows best, so keep striving hard in the last few days too.
Tonight after Maghrib we will be entering the last 10 nights of Ramadan, they are the most blessed nights in the most blessed month and in it is Laylatul Qadr, the night in which the Quran was revealed [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]. Remember Laylatul Qadr is better than 1000 months. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith (i.e. belief) and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayers in the night of Qadr out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven ." [Bukhari 2014] Narrated `Aisha: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used to say, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan." [Bukhari 2020] When is Laylatul Qadr? There is no set date for Laylatul Qadr, from the various ahadith we can conclude it is in the last 10 nights, hence why they are the most virtuous, and it is more likely that they are in the odd nights of the last 10. Nevertheless, due to there differing dates, it is recommended and imperative that we all strive as hard as we can on every single night within the last 10 days, that way we will not miss Laylatul Qadr. Narrated `Aisha: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." [Bukhari 2017] Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan ,' on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain out of the last ten nights of Ramadan (i.e. 21, 23, 25, respectively). [Bukhari 2021] What can we do? There are a number of ibadah that we can do on these nights such as: -Prayer, pray extra nawafil prayers especially tahajjud -Dua- make dua for whatever you wish, as long as its in the boundaries of shariah, there’s no limit to dua, make dua that you reach the next Laylatul Qadr so you have this opportunity again. -Dhikr and Salawat- keep your tongue heavy with the remembrance of Allah and thank Him for allowing you to reach another Laylatul Qadr. Keep sending salutations to our Prophet ﷺ. -Quran- Laylatul Qadr is when the Quran was revealed so give it its right by reciting as much as you can. -Itikaaf, if you have an opportunity to do so, go do Itikaaf and naturally all the above actions mentioned will increase too. The Prophet ﷺ used to strive hard in these last ten nights more than any other month. Lets exert ourselves as much as we can now.
