    🐂 Bullpen Brief - 3.25.26 🐂 What Gets Monetized? Every major technological disruption creates a massive surplus of value. The interesting question is never whether the value gets created. It's who keeps it. The pattern is remarkably consistent. The steam engine commoditized quickly, but the factory system and supply chains organized around it kept the margin. Railroads compressed US freight costs by 95% over the 19th century, but most railroad companies destroyed each other through competition and overbuilding. What actually got monetized was the land, the steel, Standard Oil riding the rails better than anyone else. Electricity commoditized at the generation layer. GE won by selling everything that plugged into it. The internet is the clearest modern case: TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP all became public goods almost immediately. Google, Amazon, and Facebook didn't build the internet. They built the interfaces that organized attention and commerce on top of it. The protocol was the public good. The aggregator kept the margin. Nordhaus quantified this in a 2004 NBER paper: across the US economy from 1948 to 2001, innovators captured roughly 2.2% of the total surplus from their innovations. The remaining 97.8% passed to consumers. The foundational technology becomes a public good. The monetizable layer is whatever controls distribution, aggregates demand, or sits at a point of friction the technology itself can't eliminate. Ok, now. Crypto is running the same playbook at compressed timescales. Lending protocols, AMMs, bridges, stablecoin transfers. All collapsing the cost of financial services by orders of magnitude. A bank keeps a 3% spread on lending. Aave keeps 0.2%. Visa charges 2%. Solana moves stablecoins for less than a penny. The value creation is real and significant. But if the pattern holds, most of this infrastructure is becoming the new public good. The open question, and genuinely one of the more interesting questions in crypto investing right now, is which layer on top gets to be the factory, the appliance company, or the aggregator. A few candidates: • Frontend aggregators that control order routing and user attention (the Google of onchain finance) • Stablecoin issuers that sit at the friction point between fiat and onchain rails (the tollbooth that doesn't commoditize) • Protocols that embed distribution rather than just provide infrastructure (exchanges with captive flow, not raw matching engines) Most of the current token market is priced as though the infrastructure layer itself will capture the margin. History says otherwise. The 97.8% rule doesn't stop applying because the rails are programmable.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 3.12.26 🐂 Crypto's convergence problem (and why it's actually working) Mastercard launched its Crypto Partner Program this week, pulling together 85+ companies including Circle, Binance, PayPal, Ripple, and Gemini into a single initiative focused on bridging onchain payments with existing card rails. The framing is straightforward: cross-border transfers, B2B settlement, global payouts. Not tokenization experiments. Not DeFi yield farming. Payments plumbing. This is the same week Macquarie published research calling stablecoins "a potential layer of global financial infrastructure," citing $312 billion in market cap (up ~50% YoY) and roughly $11 trillion in adjusted transfer volume last year alone. The signal is getting hard to ignore. Crypto's most durable use case is not speculation. It's money movement. What's interesting is what this means for the investable landscape. The asset universe is quietly bifurcating into three buckets, and the market is starting to price accordingly. First, you have tokens that trade on fundamentals: actual cash flows, fee revenue, protocol earnings. Think Hyperliquid, Aave, Jupiter, Morpho. These are the ones where you can build a DCF or at least a defensible revenue multiple. Second, you have assets that trade like money: BTC and ETH, valued on scarcity, network effects, and macro positioning rather than cash flow generation. The tokens with no revenue model, no value accrual, and no clear path to either are the ones facing structural selling pressure. The GENIUS Act passing, Mastercard formalizing its crypto partnerships, Visa settling in USDC, stablecoin supply at all-time highs while exchange inflows remain net negative: all of these point to the same conclusion.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 3.8.26 🐂 Stablecoins: What they can and cannot replace The "stablecoins kill Visa" narrative keeps circulating and it keeps being wrong. Start from fundamentals. A card transaction is not just a money movement. It is an unsecured credit extension, a fraud guarantee, and a dispute resolution mechanism bundled into a single swipe. Chargebacks alone process billions in consumer protection annually. When something goes wrong with a purchase, the card network bears the risk, not you. That is a product, not just a payment rail. Stablecoins are irreversible by design. No credit extension. No chargeback. No network-level fraud detection running across billions of transactions. For everyday consumer spend, this is not a close comparison. The incumbents are not standing still either. Visa has issued over 16 billion tokens. Mastercard's Agent Pay is already live for US cardholders. The card networks will absorb agentic commerce the same way they absorbed mobile wallets and tap-to-pay transit. They have never conceded a transaction category. That track record matters. Ok, now. Strip out the consumer POS debate and look at where capital actually flows. Cross-border B2B payments are still routed through chains of correspondent banks, each extracting fees, adding latency, and obscuring FX rates. Remittance costs average 6.49% globally. In sub-Saharan Africa, closer to 9%. Stablecoin rails compress settlement from days to minutes at a fraction of the cost, running 24/7 without banking hours or holiday calendars. Bridge (Stripe's stablecoin arm) saw volume quadruple in 2025, with ~60% of that coming from business-to-business flows. MoneyGram is live with USDC remittances to Colombia. These are not experiments. The structural advantage is real: programmable settlement, transparent fees, and no correspondent banking chain. The other wedge is underserved merchants. Every platform shift creates sellers that processors cannot underwrite. AI-native developers shipping micro-tools with no entity, no website, and no chargeback history are the new version of early eBay sellers who could not get merchant accounts. For them, stablecoins are not competing with cards. They are competing with nothing. The layer worth watching is orchestration, not issuance. Orchestration is the middleware that abstracts blockchain complexity into a payment instruction an enterprise finance team can actually use. The dominant architecture is what the industry calls the "stablecoin sandwich": fiat in, stablecoin transfer across borders, fiat out. The enterprise never holds crypto. Modern Treasury now offers a single API across ACH, wire, RTP/FedNow, and stablecoins on one ledger. Ripple's expanded platform has cleared over $100B in volume. The competitive insight here is that stablecoin issuance is commoditizing. Multiple providers, interchangeable tokens, regulated reserves. The moat forms at the orchestration layer: liquidity routing, compliance automation, on/off-ramp management, multi-rail settlement logic. Distribution owns the margin. Card networks and fintechs that control the end-user touchpoint can commoditize the rails underneath and defend their economics. Where stablecoins have PMF and where they do not: • Cross-border B2B and remittances: structural cost and speed advantages, proven at scale • Treasury and cash management: 24/7 settlement, programmable liquidity, real institutional demand • Crypto-native settlement: over 80% of CEX volume already pairs against stablecoins • Consumer retail: cards win on credit, fraud protection, rewards, and dispute resolution • Agentic commerce: card networks will likely tokenize their way in before stablecoins build equivalent trust layers The surface area is large but specific.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 2.25.26 🐂 Zero, a pretty new cool blockchain Every cycle produces a new "world computer" pitch. Most amount to the same thing repackaged: crank up validator hardware, sacrifice decentralization, etc etc. LayerZero's Zero is attempting something structurally different, and the partner list is what makes it worth paying attention to. Citadel Securities made a strategic investment in ZRO. DTCC, the entity that clears roughly $3.7 quadrillion in securities annually, is exploring Zero for its tokenization and collateral infrastructure. ICE, parent of the NYSE, is evaluating it for 24/7 trading rails. Google Cloud signed on for AI agent micropayments. ARK bought both equity and tokens. This is the first time we've seen this caliber of TradFi infrastructure players converge on a single crypto-native chain at once. Whether that translates to real adoption is a different question entirely, but the signal is hard to ignore. What actually matters here The core claim is one the industry has talked around for years but never cleanly delivered: execution and verification don't have to be the same thing. Every existing blockchain forces every validator to download, re-execute, and verify every transaction. That's the bottleneck. Zero uses ZK proofs to decouple these two functions, creating a heterogeneous validator set. Block Producers handle execution and proof generation. Block Validators just verify the proofs. LayerZero claims validators download less than 0.5% of actual block data and that network operating costs drop from Ethereum's ~$50M annually to under $1M at equivalent decentralization levels. If those numbers hold in production, it's an architectural class change. That freed capacity is what enables the multi-core design, where multiple "Atomicity Zones" run in parallel like concurrent processes on a CPU rather than competing for a single thread. The zone structure is where it gets practical. Zero launches with three purpose-built zones: a general-purpose EVM environment, a privacy-focused payments zone, and a dedicated trading venue for multi-asset exchange. The payments zone targets the confidentiality requirements that keep institutions off transparent chains. The trading zone is built for workflows Citadel and ICE actually care about: clearing, settlement, and high-frequency execution at a claimed 2M TPS per zone. Each zone shares a common settlement layer while executing independently, so congestion in one doesn't bleed into others. The privacy zone with compliance features baked in is almost certainly the KYC'd institutional on-ramp that regulated entities have been asking for. Worth noting: the tech stack includes published research (QMDB for storage, FAFO for parallel execution, Jolt Pro for ZK proving), not just marketing slides.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 2.22.26 🐂 Banking-as-a-Service has a reconciliation problem. Onchain doesn't. A new paper from Cornell's Dan Awrey maps out something crypto participants should pay attention to: the rise of "Banking-as-a-Service" (BaaS) has created a shadow intermediation chain in traditional finance that mirrors the exact structural failures crypto has spent years trying to fix. The basic setup is straightforward. Fintech platforms like Chime, Yotta, and Cash App aren't banks. They can't legally hold your deposits. So they partner with small chartered banks who hold customer funds in omnibus "For Benefit Of" accounts while the fintech handles everything customer-facing. The fintech gets to offer banking products without the cost of a bank charter. The partner bank gets cheap deposits and interchange revenue. A middleware layer (companies like Synapse) bridges the tech gap between the two. The result is a four-party chain: customer, fintech, middleware, partner bank. Each maintaining separate records of who owns what. When Synapse filed for bankruptcy in April 2024, the whole architecture collapsed. Not because someone stole money, but because nobody could reconcile the records. $65-95 million in customer funds went missing in the accounting gaps between Synapse, its fintech clients, and their partner banks. Evolve Bank & Trust couldn't verify individual customer balances, so it froze everything. The bankruptcy was dismissed in November 2025 with customers still not made whole. Among the 108 victim impact statements filed with the court, 35 explicitly referenced FDIC insurance as the reason they trusted their fintech platform. They were saving for homes, paying medical bills, building emergency funds. None understood that FDIC pass-through coverage only applies if the partner bank fails, not if the fintech or middleware provider goes under. Ok, now here's where it gets interesting for crypto. Awrey's proposed solution is a bespoke fintech charter requiring platforms to hold customer funds in ringfenced central bank reserve accounts with real-time beneficial ownership verification and expedited resolution if the platform fails. Read that again. Ringfenced reserves, real-time proof of ownership, transparent custody, rapid redemption. That's a description of what a well-designed stablecoin already does by default. The GENIUS Act's 1:1 backing mandate, clear licensing framework, and consumer protection standards are converging on the same insight from the regulatory side. The core problem Awrey identifies, opaque intermediation chains where reconciliation depends on trust rather than verification, is an architectural problem. And onchain infrastructure solves it architecturally: balances are publicly verifiable every block, smart contracts enforce custody rules deterministically, and there's no middleware layer that can go bankrupt and take the records with it.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 2.17.26 🐂 RWAs don't need more tokenization. They need a credit market. Tokenization is mostly solved. RWA.xyz tracks roughly $24.78B in distributed asset value across 846,808 holders. Tokenized U.S. Treasuries alone sit around $10.71B with 65,179 holders. Private credit is real activity too: ~$20.53B in active loans at an average APR near 10.18%. The representation layer works. What doesn't work is what happens next. Put a tokenized T-bill onchain and ask the obvious question: can I borrow against it? The answer, today, is "sort of, if you're willing to accept a one-size-fits-all risk box." That's the gap. Not tokenization. Credit. The problem is structural. RWAs break the assumptions that made early onchain lending simple. Most DeFi lending was built around collateral that behaved the same way under stress: liquid markets, continuous pricing, and one exit strategy (sell it fast). RWAs don't work like that. A tokenized T-bill redeems near NAV with a settlement window. A private credit position may need a scoped liquidator or a redemption process. Force both through the same enforcement model and you either get terms so conservative that good collateral becomes unusable, or terms too optimistic until stress forces repricing. Today's onchain designs fall into two camps. Venue-first (think Aave Horizon) gives you one clean borrower experience but pushes every asset through one shared enforcement logic, which gets uncomfortable when exit paths diverge. Facility-first (think Morpho Blue) keeps risk boundaries clean but fragments liquidity, so borrowers end up doing coordination work the market should handle. Ok, now here's where it gets interesting. TradFi already solved this exact tension. It's called syndication: one deal, multiple lenders, each staying inside their own mandate. The borrower doesn't care how many facilities fill the order. They experience one deal. Avon is built on this split. Strategies (facilities) stay isolated with their own eligibility, limits, and enforcement. A matching layer coordinates execution across strategies at borrow time, routing fills through an onchain order book rather than moving deposits behind the scenes. This matters because borrow demand is real-time and liquidity moves on a cadence. If matching relies on someone reshuffling capital, the borrower pays for that lag. Liquidation gets the same treatment: each strategy runs its own auction, so enforcement reflects how the collateral actually exits instead of forcing everything through a generic penalty. The key design choices: Facilities define their own eligibility, LTV bounds, and liquidation mechanics Matching aggregates depth across compatible facilities at execution time Borrowers interact once and clear as one deal Liquidation auctions are per-strategy, making enforcement costs explicit rather than hidden This is the piece the market has been circling without naming. Mandates need to be enforceable. Liquidity can't be fragmented. Syndication lets both exist at the same time. RWA tokenization put the assets onchain.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 2.11.26 🐂 Commodity Perps Onchain: It's a Liquidity Problem, Not a TradFi Dependency Hyperliquid's HIP-3 framework is quietly turning the platform into a commodity derivatives venue. Since launching permissionless perp market listings in October, the results have been hard to ignore. On February 5th, HIP-3 markets recorded $5.2B in single-day volume, the highest since launch, led almost entirely by silver perps. In late January, 2% of all global silver trading was happening on Hyperliquid. Open interest on upgraded markets hit a record $790M, up 3x from roughly $260M a month prior. The protocol generated $6.84M in daily revenue on that Feb 5th spike, with $5.25M going directly to HYPE buybacks. This isn't a narrative play. Real traders are expressing real macro views onchain. The common critique of commodity perps onchain goes something like this: they can't work properly because there's no 24/7 spot reference market, and without that TradFi anchor, oracle pricing breaks during off-hours. This framing treats the current dependency on external price feeds as a permanent structural constraint rather than what it actually is, a bootstrapping problem. Consider how MMs handle CME E-minis at 10pm ET when cash equities are closed. They hedge via other CME products, correlated futures, or they simply warehouse risk and widen spreads. The spread itself becomes compensation for carrying directional exposure without a clean hedge. This is exactly the same dynamic on Hyperliquid's commodity markets during off-hours. The difference isn't structural, it's depth. CME Gold futures trade the equivalent of 27 million ounces daily. But there's no reason the onchain venue can't grow into its own price discovery role. Crypto people consistently make the mistake of viewing their product as necessarily dependent on TradFi. The goal is for your venue to be where participants find fair on weekends. Hyperliquid's edge here is that HIP-3 doesn't try to rebuild exchange infrastructure from scratch. Anyone staking 500,000 HYPE can deploy a perp market for any asset class, and the protocol handles it with the same orderbook, matching engine, and fee structure that already processes $24B daily across crypto markets. The infrastructure was battle-tested through multiple stress events (the JELLY incident forced real improvements in ADL mechanics and liquidation logic). Now that same system handles silver, gold, and crude oil alongside BTC and ETH. Year-to-date notional volume on Hyperliquid has hit $2.6T, nearly double Coinbase's $1.4T. What needs to happen from here is straightforward: • Native MM activity deep enough to sustain price discovery independent of external feeds • Dynamic spread adjustment that compensates LPs for inventory risk during low-information periods • Continued growth in real directional demand from macro traders who want leveraged commodity exposure without touching a centralized broker • Oracle robustness during off-hours, where EMA-dampened internal pricing already functions but remains thin The $10T monthly global CFD market is the actual TAM.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 1.30.26 🐂 Perpetual Commodity szn? Hyperliquid and HIP-3, the permissionless perp deployer, have taken commodity trading by storm. Open interest across HIP-3 exchanges hit $1.2B this week, tripling in the past month. TradeXYZ dominates with 90% volume share at $31.6B cumulative. Daily traders jumped from ~5k in November to 30k+ this month. The timing isn't accidental. Gold broke $5,000 for the first time in January, silver crossed $100, and copper's ripping on Chinese PMI flipping back to expansion. Regime shift towards hard assets that retail wants exposure to. But don't people want delivery of hard assets? Less than 5% of commodity futures with delivery mechanisms ever result in physical delivery. The vast majority of contracts are closed, rolled, or cash-settled. This is a synthetic exposure market masquerading as a physical delivery market. The TAM is enormous and entirely addressable by perps. CME metals complex hit a record 2.83M contracts daily in October 2025, with metals ADV (average daily volume) up 165% year over year. Micro Gold alone averaged 300k contracts daily. All of this volume is directional exposure that never touches physical metal. As a retail or institutional participant, getting commodity exposure is painful. Borrowed spot caps you at 2x leverage with 6-8% explicit margin interest eating into returns. Futures are better. You post 8-12% margin (so 8-12x leverage), and here's the key: your excess cash can sit in T-bills earning yield while you maintain exposure. CME even accepts T-bills directly as margin collateral, so you're earning 4-5% on capital that would otherwise be dead. The carry cost of contango gets partially offset by the yield on your unused margin. But the UX is brutal. You need to learn month codes (H=March, K=May, M=June), track when liquidity migrates between contracts, manually roll positions before expiry, and navigate settlement dates that sometimes don't fall in the expiry month. For copper, only March, May, July, September, and December are liquid. The rest are ghost towns. The potential for perps to be a better instrument is strong. They don't fragment liquidity across expiries. You don't manually roll. The interest rate (carrying cost) becomes explicit via funding rate rather than embedded in futures basis, meaning a synthetic swap market will emerge to hedge it. One heuristic: perps collapse the ~6 liquid expiry months into a single liquidity pool, theoretically 6x'ing depth at any given price level. The tradeoff is yielding collateral. On CME, your T-bill margin earns yield that offsets contango drag. On HIP-3 today, USDC collateral earns nothing unless you're using something like sUSDe. This is solvable but worth watching.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 1.27.26 🐂 Banks Are Conflating Their Spread With Credit Availability - Clarity Act Ferguson and Rincon-Cruz argued in Bloomberg this week that stablecoins and bank deposits are complements, not substitutes. Historical correlation supports them: deposits and stablecoin inflows moved together since 2018 with a 0.87 coefficient. The problem is that stablecoin supply is still a crumb relative to total deposits. At $284 billion against $18+ trillion in bank deposits, we haven't hit the threshold where the relationship actually gets tested. The correlation argument is backwards looking and tells us nothing about what happens when stablecoins scale to the $2-3 trillion projections Treasury is now forecasting. The structural concern worth taking seriously is that narrow-banked stablecoins, by definition, don't do fractional reserve lending. If deposits migrate to 1:1 T-bill backed instruments, that capital isn't funding mortgages or business loans. Banks do maturity transformation that stablecoin issuers cannot. This is the legitimate version of the argument. The less legitimate version conflates two separate things: credit availability and the spread banks have captured for decades. Average savings accounts pay ~0.45%. Three-month Treasuries yield ~3.9%. Banks have pocketed that ~3.5% arbitrage on trillions in deposits, and stablecoin rewards expose it to retail depositors for the first time. We have already seen Claude take this to a new level with Cowork, with the ability to directly edit your desktop (Claude Code for non-technical people). Let's say your version of Jarvis needs to schedule a home repair and book a trip. This is functionally already a reality and well within bounds of what is possible today. Or is it? The clunky, cumbersome payment scheme of ACH/wire/card/instant payments (FedNow, Venmo, CashApp, Zelle) is barely fit for human-to-human interactions. Will this be able to solve stochastic transactions, granular fraud detection of good versus bad bots, etc.? Probably not. Imagine we had carte blanche for payments. The design space must be unencumbered by forced human interaction and approval, otherwise it derails the point of agentic commerce. We want a system that gives you the ability to encode limits and protections for the consumer, a robust protocol to transfer and handshake money, and some reasonable amount of tension between finality and security. While we are in the early innings, the stack looks something like: a model layer producing agents that reason on your behalf autonomously, a protocol layer that orchestrates and discovers agents, and then the settlement layer. Google's recent UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) and its A2A (agent-to-agent) protocols both have stablecoin settlement as a feature out of the box. It seems plausible that stablecoins should be a clear use case here. They are clean (data), cheap, and can be sent around for very granular sizes, something that will be increasingly important in a world where agents are interacting with other agents via APIs for a recipe or doctor's appointment. Now this all sounds good, but what is the bear case for why stablecoin-based settlement doesn't take off for agentic payments? The right analog here is FedNow as a replacement for P2P payments. The credit card network and interchange business model took off so aggressively while ACH/wire stayed archaic to the point where instant rails aren't really necessary anymore. India never had this intermediate step, so their system is now widely used and killer, with minimal human intervention and reconciliation. The question will be whether virtual agent-specific cards with programmable limits are good enough to skirt around human infrastructure for machine-native payments. Your orders through Robinhood first check the national best bid offer (NBBO), i.e., the tightest spreads on public exchanges. If one of the wholesalers paying for access to Robinhood's orderflow is willing to give a tighter spread, that flow is theirs for the taking. This is better for everyone: market makers are more confident they're not trading against informed flow, and users are excited they got a spread tighter than a hedge fund. Right? I would argue that while the traditional PFOF model has some benefits, it's not as sweet as one may think. A few subtle points create outsized impacts. A recent paper titled "What is the Value of Retail Order Flow" shows that the average Sharpe ratio trading against retail in German equity markets is ~18. These are statistically impossible numbers given an equities stochastic random walk and multiples higher than traditional market makers on public exchanges trading against other sharks. If we extrapolate, this creates a pattern: all retail goes through PFOF, wholesale market makers tighten spreads because they're confident, the lion's share of trading on public exchanges is now informed flow, this results in widened spreads, and the bar becomes lower for retail brokerages and wholesalers to beat NBBO. There are a long tail of other issues with PFOF that have been highlighted, but the space seems to have abided by the mantra "if it's not super broken, don't fix it (maybe)". Why does this matter for trading onchain? Proprietary AMMs and market makers providing liquidity to aggregators are now in fierce competition. In its end state, PM allows a user to use their spot/perps accounts as a unified margin account, i.e., if you hold a lot of HYPE, you can borrow cash against that HYPE to use on another perp. To understand why PM actually matters, we need to understand why it's a marquee feature in TradFi for institutional flows. Reg-T was the first introduction for retail and institutions to lever trades, allowing static 2x leverage. You can now long a single name equity or index more capital efficiently, but it doesn't solve the more salient issue: risk-netting and correlation. TIMS (options) and SPAN (futures) are the TradFi analogs that solve this, tracking volatility and correlation across your positions, stress-testing scenarios to calculate max loss, i.e., your required maintenance margin. Instead of a market maker forced to use $500k to quote $1M, if they're perfectly hedged, they can potentially use 5% margin or $50k, vastly improving return on capital. Ok, now we have an idea of why portfolio margining is huge: 80% of flows across equities are institutional, the vast majority using some version of netting and borrowing via prime brokers. Hyperliquid is introducing a similar, albeit far more restrictive (for now), version internally. They're functionally verticalizing a prime broker inside the exchange, allowing users to borrow only USDC against their HYPE to trade inside a unified margin account, paying out interest based on utilization. Ok, now we understand the implications. Who cares? I do! PM in its end state allows a step-function improvement in capital efficiency with smart contracts housing the complex logic instead of traditional prime brokers. Ideally, onchain portfolio margining makes an Archegos situation infeasible: too difficult to hide the quality of collateral, degree of leverage, and potential cascade. Why is the rollout so slow? PM could single-handedly bring down Hyperliquid. Without externalizing risk to traditional prime brokers, the exchange ingests incremental units of risk. Imagine: HYPE has an organic sharp downtick, margining requirements rise as vol increases and correlations break, forcing partial liquidations. Everyone is equally unaware of how leveraged the system was on HYPE across exchanges, forcing a vicious cycle. The HL team has interesting ideas on how PM could integrate with the EVM; a protocol could ask for deposits, issue that cash into a portfolio margin account, and mint an ERC receipt token for your share of the interest.     🐂 Bullpen Brief - 11.30.25 🐂 Quantum versus BTC BTC used to be the least interesting thing about crypto for me; a public, mostly non-programmable version of currency that you couldn't do much on top of. I've done a 180 over the past year because of what it represents: the first version of private ownership that is becoming increasingly important. After reading both of Nic Carter's articles, it feels like quantum computing and its potential to crack the most important private/public key cryptographies have largely crystallized. Before becoming too glum, the odds that a non-governmental, small-time malicious player is the one to reach Cryptographically Relevant Quantum Computing (CRQC) are quite low by my estimation. However, large private and public institutions have accelerated their precision on the number of qubits, dollars in funding to startups, and dollars up for grabs if ECC is cracked. This doesn't only have implications for our small industry alone. It would break the internet as we know it: VPNs, all cloud providers, SSH, email, HTTPS, etc. would all no longer be feasible. Before we begin the scenario plan for Q-day, we must define some basics of quantum computing and the mechanical flow of a BTC hash and its respective addresses. The main principle of most private/public key cryptography is the idea that the output is irreversible to garner an input. Nic uses the example of a deck of cards starting at point X and a fully shuffled deck at point Y. It is impossible without trying every possible combination to determine the number of times the deck was shuffled, Z. Similarly, there is no exploitable structure in the actual hashing function, therefore it remains infeasible to break without brute force, which stays infeasible even in a world of CRQC. However, the flow of an address goes something like the following: Private Key → Public Key → Address. The double hash function is the process to go from public key to address. This is the component that is quantum-resistant. But if a malicious user with CRQC capabilities had access to your public key (let's say from sending BTC to a brokerage) they could reverse engineer your private key and gain spending access to your UTXOs. This is a real threat for public keys that have been revealed, e.g., Binance's BTC cold-storage wallets holding ~250K BTC. Any wallet that has spent or sent BTC would be at quantum risk, including thousands of Satoshi's wallets, which represent ~9% of all BTC (image above).
