In respect to the election of the General of the Armed Forces Joseph Aoun as President of the Lebanese Republic, a few words can be said: some might see it as a victory of a side over the other, some might say his election is unconstitutional, "west-leaning" or completely enforced by foreign meddling. The truth is none of these things. It is, however, quite interesting to see how many MPs gave up to the will of foreign sponsors to elect Aoun, others refused, and others made deals. In Lebanese politics, and especially in this very critical phase, It is undeniably important to elect a president with ties to western and eastern countries, and this was present for many candidates, not just Aoun, but Aoun seemed to have overwhelming support by important political players in the Lebanese arena. His election today, does not bring any major changes in the Lebanese status quo, Aoun is popular among all sects as a figure who was involved in many battles to protect Lebanese sovereignty, and his election today further solidifies the Lebanese formula that has been running ever since 2005, I personally believe that the EU/Gulf nominated him after being convinced that there's no wiggle room to push for major changes in Lebanon. Lebanese politics are extremely tight, It is currently impossible to bypass the resistance, as was evident by Aoun's speech implying that the resistance and the state will cooperate in rebuilding and pushing Israel out, I reiterate this to make it clear to everyone that It is not possible for one side to "puppet" or "take control" over Lebanon, the west knows the wiggle room is small, the resistance realizes Its role has to be confined within set objectives, preserving peace and balance. His presidency is promising, as he has good relations with most Lebanese players, respects the Lebanese formula, and has foreign support to shield the country from Israeli violations, and promises for reconstruction and funding for what was destroyed during war. Oh, and trust me, if you think Hezbollah would vote for a candidate that would act against them, then you're missing the whole point of Lebanon's multi-confessional system. 🇱🇧
