⚡️🇺🇸 President Trump has ordered the Navy to remove the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System from its newest aircraft carriers and replace it with older steam catapults, a move expected to cost billions of dollars. A national security memorandum directs the Pentagon and the Navy to present plans for removing EMALS within two months and also calls for replacing the Ford-class carriers' electromagnetic weapons elevators. The change would begin with the fourth Ford-class carrier, the USS Doris Miller. The shift would revert the Navy's most advanced ships to a system that requires more sailors to operate and is harder to maintain, even as the Navy already struggles to keep its ships fully staffed. Trump's frustration with the electromagnetic system dates back to at least 2017, when he said "it lacked the power of the older steam-based technology". General Atomics, the system's manufacturer, pushed back on the decision saying that work on the Doris Miller's catapults and arresting gear was already halfway finished and warned that changing course now would introduce cost, schedule, and integration risks.
