🇪🇸 The state the city of Roquetas del Mar, Almería, was in last night.
🇫🇷 Olivier Faure, leader of the Socialist Party, criticised President Emmanuel Macron for riding a jet ski in Brégançon during a heatwave and widespread wildfires. He argued that, while France suffers and some citizens cannot take holidays, the president appears to be enjoying leisure activities. The Paris Match cover featuring Macron on holiday, described as his “last summer at the helm,” has provoked strong backlash in the context of the ongoing crisis.
🇫🇷💥 Eight far-left students aged 19 to 28 were indicted in Paris for conspiracy and possession of incendiary materials after allegedly training with homemade explosives in the Petite Ceinture tunnels. Authorities suspect they planned a violent action during a Lyon-Turin railway protest in Italy. Arrested on 23 July following a police report, they were released under judicial supervision despite the prosecutor’s request for detention. Investigators found firework mortars, plastic bottles, and zip ties, while their lawyer denounced excessive anti-terrorist measures.
🇩🇪 🇩🇪 Berlin warns of growing idealisation of the former GDR in eastern Germany, particularly in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, ahead of the September 2026 regional elections. Culture Minister Wolfram Weimer, along with victim associations, accuses left- and right-wing extremists, including the AfD, of deliberately downplaying the crimes of the communist regime. Authorities condemn acts such as celebrating the GDR anthem at campaign rallies, stressing that democracy is increasingly being challenged by attempts to romanticise the former dictatorship.
🇳🇴🐻❄️ A person was fined €4,550 in Svalbard, in the Arctic, for sounding a foghorn to wake up a sleeping polar bear, the authorities of the Norwegian archipelago announced on Thursday. This act, prohibited under the local regulations protecting the species since 1972, caused the animal to move away.
🇩🇪🇳🇱🇦🇹🇩🇰🇬🇷🇺🇬According to information cited by the Greek press, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Greece are finalizing a plan to build a repatriation center in Uganda, where migrants in irregular situations would be sent. The facility is expected to have a capacity of between 5,000 and 10,000 people and is scheduled to be completed by 2027. The center would be primarily intended for "migrants who have caused problems in the countries where they are currently being hosted." Minors would be excluded from this mechanism.
🇷🇴🇪🇸🇲🇩On the night of August 15th to 16th, at 04:44, the surveillance systems of the Ministry of National Defense detected the entry of an aerial target into Romanian airspace, originating from the Republic of Moldova, approximately 24 km north of Galati. A Spanish Air and Space Force F-18 aircraft, conducting air policing duties at the 57th Air Base "Mihail Kogălniceanu," while on a monitoring mission, made radar contact with the target and received authorization to engage. The drone was safely shot down by the F-18 aircraft at 05:01. — Romanian MoD statement
🇪🇸Ceuta and Melilla are not just Spanish; they are super-Spanish and cannot be touched. Any attack on Ceuta and Melilla is an attack on Spain as a whole. This must never happen again. — Spanish Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles
Adding De Valera to the team of The Europe Update was my best idea this summer.
