FORGOTTEN CUSTOMS OF THE GERMANIC PEOPLES: OUTLAWRY Among the Germanic peoples, law was one of the foundations of society. It protected the community, settled disputes, and defined the responsibilities expected of every free person. Keeping your word, honoring your oaths, supporting your kin, and living according to the customs of the community were not simply personal virtues. They were part of what it meant to live within the law. Some crimes were punished by one of the harshest penalties in the Germanic world: outlawry. The Icelandic law code Grágás describes the sentence in plain terms. A person declared a full outlaw (skóggangr) lost the protection of the law and was required to leave Iceland. Anyone who remained after the time allowed could be killed without paying compensation. Grettis saga shows what that sentence looked like in practice. After being declared an outlaw, Grettir Ásmundarson spent years living in isolation, hunted, and cut off from the legal protections every free person once possessed. The same respect for the law even appears in the legendary traditions. In Gesta Danorum, Saxo Grammaticus recounts that Odin was driven from Ásgarð after violating Rindr, and Ullr ruled in his place until Odin's return. Saxo wrote centuries after the conversion and interpreted older traditions through a Christian lens, but his account may preserve an earlier heathen tradition. Whether historical or legendary, the story reflects how seriously the Germanic peoples regarded the law and the consequences for violating it. Outlawry was one of the harshest punishments in the Germanic world because it stripped a person of the rights and protections they once enjoyed as a member of the community. The surviving law codes and sagas show that law, honor, and accountability were inseparable in Germanic society. The God of Israel is not the gods of the Germanic peoples. Our ancestral inheritance is not found in foreign ideologies, but in the sacred traditions of our own people. We honor Óðinn, Þórr, Freyr, Frigg, Freyja, and the gods who stood beside our ancestors for generations. Our strength does not come from abandoning our heritage. It comes from reclaiming it. By learning the traditions, honoring the gods, and living according to the customs of our forebears, we restore what was nearly lost. Strength Through Tradition Að fornum sið.

Why I am a Revivalist? Before I answer this question, I am going to examine & critique the other two first. New-Age Heathenry isn't necessarily new. Today, you will find self-proclaimed Heathens mixing Germanic Heathenry with any number of foreign or new concepts. It's modern iteration began in the early years of revival, when there wasn't as much information on what Heathenry was. Because they did not know what it was, its identity became vague, then permiable. As it became permiable, it absorbed ideas from everywhere to the point where most dont care what the sources define Heathenry as. They will do whatever they want to do, solely because of how they feel as opposed to what actually is. Without a defined identity, Heathenry becomes whatever you want it to be, and therefore does not keep it's shape, and rather takes on what primarily fills in the gaps. Some people will use neoplatonism, but swap the Greek names for Germanic ones; but what that becomes is neoplatonism wearing the mask of, or larping as, Heathenry. Though it's modern iteration can base itself out of the mid-20th century, this mentality is actually quite ancient. When the Germanic tribe of the Franks conquered christian-occupied Roman Gaul, they incorporated jesus worship into their system for political expediency. This olive-branch of syncretism allowed for the foreign christianity to fester and eventually destroy all Heathenry. The morale is that syncretism leads to the death of those which engage in it by not protecting one's identity & borders. Reconstructionists appear at first glance to solve the issues with the New-Agers. There needs to be a core identity. That identity must necessitate borders. The identity & the borders are dictated by the sources. However, because we don't have a full picture of what exactly, down to minute details, what it was, there are some gaps. This isn't as big of a problem as some make it out to be. In these gaps very little to no exploration is allowed, lest Heathenry becomes like the New-Agers, allowing Heathenry to become something it was not. This, on it's face, seems to be more of a reactionary response to the New-Agers, as opposed to just sticking with the sources. The reason being is some (not all) Recons will 'fill the gaps' with 'what Heathenry was before Heathenry.' Inso doing, becoming exactly what they avoid to be, by adding-in other foreign elements exactly like the New-Agers. The other path Recons take is to leave the gaps as gaps until more information comes their way via archeology. What remains is true to what Heathenry was, but quasi-incomplete; which, as stated previously, has the danger of becoming New-Age itself despite it's 'foundational safeguards.' So why Revivalism? Historically, ancestral faiths were living traditions. I often think of Grimnismal, where Odin visits the king of the Goths in disguise. Before this event occurred, this was not a recorded legend. It was a specific legend, with a specific time & location. This is not New-Age, as it recognizes Gods continue to interact with us, whilst also not contradicting what Odin has done in the past. If it did change the essence of Odin, it wouldn't be authentically Heathen. I think of the PROSE Edda, which does change the nature of the Gods in certain places. These changes are known to not be authentic, thus using Grimnismal and the Prose Edda, we can define what is and what is not authentically Heathen whilst not being entirely closed-off or flash-frozen in the Viking Era. A tree does not grow to its full potential if it remains inside of a pot. Likewise, as we Revive, we should allow the tree of our faith to grow naturally. We should have room to explore; but within reason, as to not become something we are not. This is why I chose Revivalism, hence the name of this channel. That, in my estimation, is why Revivalism is not just how our faiths operated in antiquity, it is not just the most practical path today, but in my opinion is Inevitable.

Iamblichus, 1500 years ago, explicitly telling us that yes it is possible to reconstruct damaged traditions: "For all these reasons, then, let us call upon the gods as our leaders, entrust both ourselves and our discourse to them, and follow wherever they may lead. We should not be deterred by the fact that this school has long been neglected; that it has been hidden beneath estranged teachings and certain secret symbols; that it has been overshadowed by many false and spurious writings; and that it has been obstructed by many other difficulties of the same kind. The will of the gods is enough for us, and with it one can endure difficulties even more perplexing than these." - Book 1 of On the Pythagorean Life

FORGOTTEN CUSTOMS OF THE GERMANIC PEOPLES: ÚTISETA Many of the customs once familiar throughout the Norse world survive today only as names preserved in medieval texts. One of them was útiseta, a heathen practice that Christian lawmakers considered important enough to forbid. The term is commonly translated as "sitting outside," yet the sources never explain exactly what the practice involved. They simply forbid it, suggesting the custom was already familiar to those expected to obey the law. One of the earliest surviving references appears in Laurence M. Larson's translation of the Norwegian Gulathing Law. In its Church Law section, those who practiced witchcraft or "went abroad at night to call forth evil spirits and to promote heathendom thereby" were condemned. The Old Norse text includes the prohibition útisetu at vekja troll upp ("sitting outside to awaken trolls"). References to útiseta also appear in later Christian law codes. Other versions instead prohibit útiseta performed "to inquire into fate" (spyrja forlǫg). Beyond these brief references, the laws offer no explanation for why the custom was practiced or how it was performed. In Shamanism in Norse Myth and Magic, Clive Tolley suggests that útiseta may have been a solitary practice intended to obtain knowledge from spirits, though the surviving evidence is too limited to reconstruct the custom with confidence. Exactly how people practiced útiseta may never be known. Even so, the medieval sources preserve enough to remind us that it was once a recognized heathen custom, long before it passed into history.
